FDA won't allow food to be labeled GMO-free
fyi < 50 percent of article posted

This is similar to when the FDA banned milk producers from saying 'no added hormones' or GBH-free. Ultimately, and surprisingly the PEOPLE won out against the censorship (by big business and the government) and now we have labeling.

"Extra labeling only confuses the consumer,' biotech spokesman says"

That the Food and Drug Administration is opposed to labeling foods that are genetically modified is no surprise anymore, but a report in the Washington Post indicates the FDA won't even allow food producers to label their foods as being free of genetic modification.

...
It has sent a flurry of enforcement letters to food makers, including B&G Foods, which was told it could not use the phrase "GMO-free" on its Polaner All Fruit strawberry spread label because GMO refers to genetically modified organisms and strawberries are produce, not organisms.
....
It told the maker of Spectrum Canola Oil that it could not use a label that included a red circle with a line through it and the words "GMO," saying the symbol suggested that there was something wrong with genetically engineered food....

David Edwards... that "extra labeling only confuses the consumer. ... As we stick more labels on products that don't really tell us anything more, it makes it harder for consumers to make their choices."

The Post ... "comes at a time when Americans seem to want to know more about their food - where it is grown, how it is produced and what it contains."

"The public wants to know and the public has a right to know," ...

It would cause other brands, the ones they want you to buy, to lose sales. The large manufacturers who donate to the lobbies and bring lawsuits to their smaller competiton. Additionally it would raise awareness.

Ten of fifteen years ago this was a big deal in the dairy industry.

Re: FDA won't allow food to be labeled GMO-free
can't they just change the last letter...

"GMF-free"

"genetically modified food"

or even just use "GM-free"

or "non-GM food"

this should be easy to get around

Re: FDA won't allow food to be labeled GMO-free
From the article:

"...

The agency warned the dairy industry in 1994 that it could not use "Hormone Free" labeling on milk from cows that are not given engineered hormones, because all milk contains some hormones.

It has sent a flurry of enforcement letters to food makers, including B&G Foods, which was told it could not use the phrase "GMO-free" on its Polaner All Fruit strawberry spread label because GMO refers to genetically modified organisms and strawberries are produce, not organisms.

It told the maker of Spectrum Canola Oil that it could not use a label that included a red circle with a line through it and the words "GMO," saying the symbol suggested that there was something wrong with genetically engineered food.

"This to me raises questions about whose interest the FDA is protecting," House Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) told the Post. Kucinich has repeatedly introduced bills in the House that would require the labeling of genetically modified foods.

David Edwards, director of animal biotechnology at the Biotechnology Industry Organization, told the Post that "extra labeling only confuses the consumer. ... It differentiates products that are not different. As we stick more labels on products that don't really tell us anything more, it makes it harder for consumers to make their choices.

..."

It's obvious that this is point-of-view and opinion regulation of otherwise true information that is not scientifically disprovable

This is such a blatant abuse of first amendment rights.

I feel like filing a class action suit myself, where's the ACLU now?

When you cant label something as "non gmo", it means communism is in charge. Its not a free society.

How about this: non-bio-engineered or "naturally developed", which means peeps would in time become aware of what these words actually mean.

We too (poor confused sheep) can come up with some other label to inform the public about the foods they are buying.

Its up to the companies to outsmart these b.......ds.

Wish it were that simple. But, the big companies have lots of money to fight even that labeling. Time will tell.

While we wait for sanity to return to the FDA, we can avoid buying those products that use GMO frankenfoods. Ya just gotta know who they are and the alternatives. Here is a really good watchdog site out to keep us aware! Best I've seen:

If you have time, read the reasons WHY the modified "foods" are so dangerous to consume. They bring on slow death to humans. The ugly truth:
