unknown User ID: 1020518 United States 09/19/2010 09:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think so. When I was a teenager we had a pet opossum. We also had two cats. Nothing ever happened because they tended to avoid each other. One day as an experiment I put the opossum and the cat in a smaller room together just to gauge the interaction between them. The possum opened it's jaws (their mouths are much larger than they appear and have very sharp teeth) to bite the cat. The gape of it's jaws was large enough to completely encompass the cat along it's spine, and appeared it could chomp the cat in half. I immediately separated the two now that my experiment was done. They will naturally avoid each other as best as possible so it shouldn't be a big deal, but if a showdown occurred I'm sure it wouldn't be pretty. |
Possum User ID: 992986 Australia 09/19/2010 09:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The "possum" of North America is just a shorter name for an opossum, but true possums are different from opossums, and not related at all, except by virtue of both animals being marsupials. Possums belong to the family Phalangeridae and order Marsupialia, while opossums belong to the order Didelphimorphia, although they are also marsupials. Opossums are found only in North America, although there is a "water possum", also known as the yapok, which is found in central and South America. True possums are found in New Guinea, Australia (including Tasmania), Sulawesi (Indonesia) and a few other small islands in the Pacific region. Although not native to New Zealand, the brush-tailed possum was introduced into that country over a century ago and has subsequently become a pest. The North American Opossum has a bare tail. All varieties of Australian possums have furry tails. There are many varieties of possums in Australia (and New Guinea), including Gliders and the Cuscus. there are more limited varieties of the opossum. Captain Cook's botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, named the Australian animal "Possum", referring to it as "an animal of the Opossum tribe" because he believed there was a physical resemblance. Opossums were named by Captain John Smith in 1612. |

This is quite incorrect, however. If you dont have coyotes that is. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 616779+1 Sometimes a large fox or another cat, too. We had one get really sick from a copperhead bite. Our neighbors lost their cat because another neighbor was throwing meats in their compost heap and the cat ate the bad meat. |
