Historically speaking, there are two population pools TPTB generally use to recruit into the military, before making the jump to a mandatory draft. They will recruit foreigners with the promise of citizenship after service. And also convicted criminals, generally convicted of lesser crimes, though not always.

WASHINGTON -- A Republican-led filibuster on Tuesday blocked efforts to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays in the military, shelving an Obama administration priority at least until after the November election.

The measure repealing the military policy banning gays from serving openly was part of the 2011 Defense authorization bill. Democrats tried to bring up the bill for consideration but failed to get the 60 votes necessary to overcome determined GOP-led opposition. Supporters voted 56-43 in favor of starting debate on the Defense bill, short of the 60 needed.

Democrats control 59 votes in the Senate.

By blocking the bill, Republicans also held up passage of the so-called Dream Act, an immigration measure that was to provide a route to citizenship for youths who were in the country illegally but had attended college or served in the military.

Supporters of repealing the don't ask, don't tell policy vowed to try again.

"This ain't over," Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.), who authored the repeal of the military policy on openly gay service members, said even before the vote. "It's long past time to repeal this policy."

The outcome was all but set earlier Tuesday when Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, a key Republican who supported repealing "don't ask, don't tell" signaled her unease with the limited floor schedule for debate. Collins had been the only Republican to support the repeal in an earlier committee vote. Activists, including musician Lady Gaga, rallied in Collins' home state of Maine on the eve of the vote to encourage Collins and fellow Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe to vote to advance the bill.

Republicans complained that Democrats were using the bill as a vehicle to tack on election-year issues that would motivate Democratic voters to go to the polls, even though Republicans had similarly added provisions to past Defense bills.

Most people honestly do not care if someone is homosexual, the whole what you want to do in the privacy of your home is fine. What really pisses a lot of people off is the "in your face accept me as normal" homosexuals who demand that you be tolerant of their deviant lifestyle.

I am sorry to say deviant because I do have many homosexual friends who I love dearly; but, they will even admit that they "deviated" from the normal lifestyle of the majority of society. They state that they are different.

Personally, I would not want to sleep or shower with a lesbian even though I personally do not care that she is a lesbian...I would feel like I was showering with a bunch of guys. If I didn't know she was a lesbian then that old saying of "ignorance is bliss" applies.

I asked my husband how he would feel if he had to room or shower with someone who was gay he stated he would feel very uncomfortable as well; I then stated same gay guy but now you don't he's gay, how would you feel? He said, as long as he didn't know he would be fine.

You can make all the jokes you want about "catching the gay" or calling people who feel uncomfortable bigots but that truly isn't the case.

You like to go to extremes and point out how straights can be violent, how would you like to room with someone who had a history of violent behavior? Would you feel comfortable rooming or showering with someone with a known violent behavior? Now what if you didn't know that they had violent behavior how would you feel?

Before you jump down my throat, I am not equating homosexuality with violent behavior, I am strictly giving you a comparison. Wouldn't you feel uncomfortable as you are not a violent person? I would feel uncomfortable quartering with an open homosexual person for the same reason, I am not homosexual.

In the Navy, people in the same workcenter aren't allowed to have sex with each other, and there is no sex allowed while underway. Anyone caught breaking these rules is punished. I don't see why it should be different depending on what genders are doing to screwing.

I can't think of another example that you most likely haven't experienced. Like I said, I have friends who are homosexuals and I would do anything for them as well. I really don't care what they do in the privacy of their homes. But, by the same token, if we all went camping together I would really rather not sleep in the same tent as my lesbian friends nor shower in front of them, I wouldn't feel comfortable. Just being honest.

I was thinking more in terms of the actual day-to-day living ... as in taking showers, bathroom time, and other personal hygiene time where one would be comfortable in the company of others of the same gender, but not with those of the opposite gender.

Come on Nikki, yes, modesty. Heck even after being pregnant twice I am still modest in front of my male OB/GYN or any male medical staff. Now when it was female, I was somewhat modest but not to the same extent.
