BRIEF AND TO THE POINT User ID: 381742 United States 09/22/2010 11:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Call the manufacturer and see if they will give you a copy...I had my recover disc stolen and called Toshiba and they sent me one for free...well, I had to pay shipping...Then keep him out of the online porn... Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it! when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support! :Brieffromnativea: |

You probably better get a actual person helping you at your machine. Time is a great teacher, unfortunately it kills all its pupils. |

Thanks to all who answered. I have a copy of windows but he said it won't boot up on it. I'll check it out some more. His system, according to Compac teck support is to old and they don't have a disk restore for it. Thanks again to everyone who commented. I will have him read all of your answers when he comes here. |
Being * gnieB User ID: 609135 United States 09/22/2010 11:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Make sure the disc drive is operational. If it is then examine the Operating system. Which one is it? Windows 95, XP, Vista or 7? (may be linux, but unlikely) If the drive failed, you will need to install a new or used one. They are relatively cheap these days. (specially if you go on Craigslist or Ebay, OS software is very cheap there as well). However either way, all his stored data, may be gone, unless you bring the failed drive to a data recovery supplier, who will open the disc drive, remove the discs, put them on a operational drive of the same brand and kind and load the data on a CD for insertion into your grandfathers new operational computer. |

Take cover off computer and locate CPU chip. Cut female end off extension cord, use a wire strippers and expose the black and white wires down to the copper. Plug extension cord in and arc black and white wires across CPU chip. Should run fine after that. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1106475He has no money....what are his options? Thanks very much If he has a friend who has the startup disk for the OS that was on the computer, he could borrow it and reinstall using the cd-key that is usually stuck to the bottom(laptop/back(desktop) of the computer case. There is nothing illegal about using any copy of the disk(or data found on the disk) you can find, as long as you use a cd-key that you own. |

He has no money....what are his options? <<<<<< No info on year of computer, no info on OS on it, and you explain nothing, so you are assuming already that he needs the Disk for the OS, which you don't have. Sorry, but it could be anything from the CMOS (BIOS) battery to anything else like a failed hard drive, to needing a newer computer to buy. And that does not help if it is a virus or you have a anti-virus program or anything else. Sorry, no miracles are going to happen on a computer. |
