FYI, this is driven by insurance providers, who offer lower rates to employers that do not hire smokers (or, as the testing exists now, anybody with nicotine in their system -- which could just as easily be a non-smoker in his second year of nicorette gum use) because it drives their costs up.

All this testing is actually allowing a private company to have access to your medical records. Medical records are supposed to be only between you and your doctor -- but not since the Patriot Act. Now, it is going in a data base somewhere.

Realistically, it probably won't show up after 96 hours. It might, but not likely. A urine test, almost definitely not.

Like one poster said, if it does show positive, just explain it away and ask for another test.

Seems to me the potential employer is the one being abrasive.

One local company has an absolute NO SMOKING ANYTIME policy. Their reasoning is that because with the product they produce it has been statistically shown than smokers working around that product have a MUCH high chance of getting cancer (about 20x) than non smokers, which directly affects their health insurance rates, workers compensation rates, and death claim rates.

By getting rid of their smokers they cut their corporate health insurance bill by something approaching 50%, cut their workers comp and death claim bill by a HUGE amount, AND for those who used to smoke but made the transition have improved the overall health of their employees (and extended their life spans), though that final benefit accrues to the employees not the company.

Some employees who were smokers sued ... but lost since the company could show that with their particular product it greatly increased the danger that the employees faced on the job even if their smoking was restricted to after hours only.

SO do diabetics, fat ass losers who chow down fast food, drinkers...etc..They don't make health care premiums go up?

This makes sense and I can see the justification for a non-smoking policy, as long as the connection between nicotine and higher mortality rates can be proven....

In one of his books (I forget which one), Robert Anton Wilson said that soon "everything not forbidden will be compulsory, and everything not compulsory will be forbidden" - unfortunately, it appears he is right! I had a friend here in Canada that worked for a company with a non-smoking policy. She was fired because a fellow employee saw her one Friday night in a bar (a few years ago before they outlawed smoking in bars), and she was smoking. Her "co-worker" sang to the execs. She was fired the following Monday. She told them all to go fuck themselves, eat shit and die.

That test will determine if you are hired or not. Insurance for smokers is non-existant, and costs more than the money you would make them.

Nowadays, an actual skill and knowledge of the job is the LAST thing they care about, because of all these laws and regulations, hoops and EPA reports, all they care about is your health and eating habits, and finacial ability to sue them over some labor/management dispute, and are you taking any pills? We only hire people who have been medicated into walking zombies, they punch the clock with slow, punctual, on time clicks, and fit in their cubicles with a little help from some butter and a big shoehorn, and dont rock the boat! Even when the company takes their stapler and they dont even get a piece of their middle-assistant intern supervisor from HR with HIV's 15 year anniversary sugar and fat free cake like everybody else did, they dont cause the company to either lose or gain from that bottom line profit loss, which means you are valuable asset to the "TEAM".

At least until the buy out merger goes thru, or your loss of job at 63, when you find all that money you put into your Company retirement account was for the COMPANYS retirement, not your own, didn't you read the fine print????


Personally, i think any pre-employment testing that involves them collecting your piss and analyzing it it some bizarre taste test ritual, bizzarre in the extreme...
