You have yet to experience the fascinating horror of a family reunion in the deep south. What happens is that for some reason, certain types of people don't move far from the house they grew up in. So after a couple hundred years, you are surrounded by your own family and you end up marrying a distant cousin. Then those recessive genes start piling up and . . . voila! the remote mountainous and other areas of the south were inhabited along time ago--in isolation and lack of fast transportation and with few possible mates to choose from within a few miles inbreeding occured and got worse as time went on. many lived out thier lives close to home with 50 miles being quite a distance--and also no reason to do it to begin with. people associate inbreeding with incest within the family such as a father abusing his daughters. in fact after about 150 years it would be almost impossible for people to find a wife that was not related even though they likely didnt know it. They wouldnt know--nor would they care being farming and hunting people not genetic scientists. deformities can be unusual or take generations to pop up. a mountain boy would know it was not right to abuse his sister--however when he eventually took a wife--it would be virtually impossible that peggy sue 6 miles up the trail on woverton mountain--was likely a cousin. they might have a wonderful family--but then funny things could happen as thier kids had kids--up pops autism or other deformities physical and or mental. They also were a tough people with no law enforcment or any type of rules within 100 miles--so they did as they pleased.. If billy starts courting peggy sue--there would be no deep analyzes of bloodlines or family history--family history long forgotten or kept secret.
