Handcuffed Woman Commandeers Police Car; Leads Cops on 100 MPH Chase
PORT ARTHUR - Law enforcement officers have caught a woman who had been detained and handcuffed but managed to crawl from the rear seat to the driver's seat of a new Port Arthur Police patrol car and led officers on a chase at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour, according to PAPD Chief Mark Blanton.

No one was hurt.

Candace Broussard, 28, was detained at about 11 a.m. the Lamar State College Port Arthur campus for trespassing.

Chief Blanton said the woman was in handcuffs and in the rear seat of a new PAPD patrol car. The vehicle was running and Officer Max Wolgast was outside completing his investigation.

She managed to get her hands in front of her and slide open the prisoner screen that separates the front and rear areas of the patrol car, according to Chief Blanton.

He said the woman, still in handcuffs, managed to crawl to the front of the patrol car, get behind the wheel and take off heading north on Highway 69.

Law enforcement officers with PAPD and a number of other agencies chased the woman at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour.
