Avion car goes border to border on one tank of diesel
- In 1984, Craig Henderson and Bill Green built a one-of-a-kind super fuel-efficient car called the Avion. In 1986, it set the Guinness world record for fuel economy by averaging 103.7 mpg (2.27L/100km) while driving from the Mexican to Canadian borders. It is still on the road... and breaking its own records. On August 29th, they drove 1,478 miles (2,379 km) to the Mexican border getting 119.1mpg (1.97L/100km).

America continues to block diesel, unfortunately.

They have 70 mpg cars over in Europe right now.

Diesel. Poor performance. Awful smelling. Better mileage.

Nah. I'll take gas.

Yeah, but diesel prices have gone through the roof over here.
Many small petrol cars are very efficient these days.
There's a trend towards turbo-charging small petrols also.

Diesel should be cheaper than gasoline, but suppliers and taxes make it more expensive.

Yea, there are more efficient cars over in Europe, whereas we're dragging years behind them.

It's sad that this car from the 1980's beats anything on our roads today.

Space Age car lacks nothing but some well-heeled buyers

"Henderson had become the sole entrepreneur still dedicated to the idea of building the car for sale. His Henderson Motor Co. is now ready to accept its first order for an Avion, priced at $30,000."

Re: Avion car goes border to border on one tank of diesel
"Originally the car was built as a performance sports car," Henderson said "But we found it got great fuel economy."

After setting the record, Henderson said they hoped to be able to start mass-producing the car. Three things got in their way: money, experience, and a nation of drivers unconcerned about fuel prices.

"In 1986 the fuel economy was not a great concern," Henderson said. "We had a glut of fuel. Boy, how times have changed. It's one thing to build a car that gets 100 miles per gallon; it's another thing to build a company that builds that car."
