Honestly... What's Arizona like?
I want to relocate there with my husband by 2013.

I currently live in Vancouver. It is a boring dreary city full of aloof unfriendly robots and rich foreigners. It has the most obvious disparity between super-rich and dirt poor homeless junkie fuckbags that I've ever seen. There is no room here for a middle class. But there are more group homes, fetal-alcohol zombies, damaged street people, drunk natives, and various examples of eugenics in action, per square inch, than possibly any other place in the world. The police are brutal and unaccountable to anything [But I suppose that's the same anywhere in North America]

I like sunshine and actual Mexican food. I like cacti. I am tired of getting my vitamin D from little white pills. I look great with a slight tan, and I haven't seen stars in the night sky in about 7 years.

Would Arizona be a good fit? Are there a lot of hippies? That could be a deal breaker [still better than fruit-picking French-Canadian hippies any day of the week].

Alls I know is, as an American, I've fucking had it with Canada. I turned 18 and I had the desire to either live in the desert, or the pacific northwest. I also sought to escape the increasingly fascist climes in the states. I made my hasty decision, and while it was fun for a while, the fruit is off the bloom. I loathe this place and everything about it. The fake greenwashing. The massive superiority-complex. The lame drug culture. The excessive number of Asians. The rich trust fund kids. The smell of mildew and dankness. There's so little sun here, I still have green tomatoes in my garden.

Tell me the grass is greener there. Please.

Phoenix is really two cities - Phoenix and Scottsdale.

Scottsdale is clean and expensive.

Phoenix is Serf-ville, where all the $12/hr people live and there's a lot of them. Phoenix reminds me a little of Los Angeles, the street system was one of the best I've ever seen but even it has been choked by growth.

Houses are cheap now but there are no real jobs. Most people worry about the heat but it wasn't an issue for me (or most others) because you're indoors most of the time anyway.

Most of Scottsdale is nice, clean, safe.

Phoenix proper has a lot of drug crime.

Personally, I live Vancouver better.

Sick. That doesn't sound fun.
But I was thinking more rural. To live in a healthy amount of isolation someday.

Everyone loves Vancouver until they live here. By all means a fun place to visit, though. Thanks for sharing!

outside of Phoenix, sure, there's a lot of empty land.

But... it's a desert.

sand, rocks, a few cacti but mostly tumbleweeds.

Re: Honestly... What's Arizona like?
We recently had an influx of Canadians to my town (Maricopa, AZ). They seem to be a flighty bunch. Come down, trim the plants, decide it's still to damned hot, drive all the way back to bum-fuck Canada and repeat the process all year long.

Anyone who moves from a colder climate to Phoenix area climate will be drained of energy for weeks. All you'll do is sleep. Once you get passed that you'll have to deal with the power bills. You never get over those.

Feel free to come down and visit first. We like beer, guns, and off-road vehicles. We speak with authority and tend to vote conservative. Most of us carry sidearms (no permit required to carry concealed in Arizona) so be polite.

I'm addressing Southern Arizona. Northern Arizona is a completely different story. Up Flagstaff way you get more into the artsy-homo-faggy-liberal types.

That's not 100% fair.

Arizona has three distinct geological regions: The basin, the range, and the Colorado plateau.

The basin can be WAY more arid than your picture would indicate.

The range area is major awesome.

The high desert, which is mostly Indian reservation, is meh.

Those are snow-birds. Basically retirees with disposable income. I'm young and I want to start a business and a life somewhere.

My husband really likes [what he's read about] guns. I didn't know you could carry there. Guess I know I'll never get raped, and that is a nice thought. When I walk home from my night shifts and some fucking weirdo is following me closely enough that I can hear his breathing, I am clutching my bear spray, and even that is illegal to carry!

We might be better received in the Northern parts, however. Not that I'm a liberal and not that I believe in voting.

But y'all sound like good people. Thanks so much for the infos!

You can play the technicality game if you like.

The reality is that she'll end up in tumbleweeds & sand.

If you want to babble about accuracy, how about that comment "most of us carry guns".

Now that's a crock.

That is a brutal depiction, and maybe true...
But Vancouver is a vacuum of culture. There isn't a building older than 150 years here. There is no art and nothing that isn't imported from elsewhere. They make American movies here and host the olympics and think that makes them a Big Deal. It is a joke that isn't funny anymore.

I've lived here for 40 years so I am familiar with the concept of snow birds :-) We like them slow-roasted over charcoal.

Come on down and visit while it's still "warm" and see what you think.

Stay out of the Central Valley (Phoenix) because it's been overrun by Mexi-Calis. Either go East Valley (Chandler, Gilbert), far-West Valley (Peoria, Glendale) or come on down to cow country and we'll have a few too many drinks and enjoy some gun play.

My dad grew up in Denver. Maybe that's not a bad idea. A place with 4 seasons would be nice. And the topography varies a lot, like here.

After thirty years of desert, I prefer to have some water and greenery around.

That's another thing I miss about America-- Cheap beer! Can you believe a fucking six pack costs like $16.

I have to drink this brutal french strong beer just to get drank for less than 8 bucks.

I would be honored to partake in beer and cannibalism with you... someday.

I'm prejudice. I literally feel the desert. It's in my blood and there's nothing I can do about it. I've seen so much wonder here. I could never leave my desert. Her beauty is beyond description to one who spent his childhood exploring the wonders she has to offer.

The Sonoran Desert is a spiritual place to me and to ever leave here would be heartbreak.

Honestly, can you feel that way about some place like New Jersey?
