One might say, "What good is enlightenment if you don't pray?"
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1112324

Prayer is a dualistic act-- ask and receive (or not) or a trade of faith and service for "bounties" (good stuff) in this life or the next. Prayer can only exist when there is a separation between the person doing it and the agency they expect to reach...it must be separate from themselves.

Enlightenment is a non-dualistic state of consciousness in touch with the eternal being-ness behind all things. Dualistic considerations dissolve when consciousness is realized from it's origin above matter, energy, space and time. An enlightened being is truly In The World But Not Of It.

Your question shows you have no understanding of Buddhism. Buddhism isn't a mythological explanation of the rules of life handed down by a god. It's totally experiential (you have to experience it YOURSELF and do the work YOURSELF). Buddhists don't channel astral entities, they laugh at them or try to teach them the way out of their suffering.

Re: Buddhist monk prays all day in the same spot for 20 years, dude left a mark in the floor.
The Monk is practicing what is called Buddhist Prostrations. You move from standing, to kneeling, then to prone, then you reverse the movements till you are standing again. That is one prostration. One prostration takes about 5-10 seconds. Like many Monks, he has lived his entire life in a monastery. And except for cleaning and cooking and doing other services for the monastery, he meditates all the time. Probably 8-12 hours a day, depending upon how much he sleeps. Like many monks, he probably joined the monastery when he was a young teenager. So for most of his 70 years he's been doing 3000 prostrations every single day in the exact same spot, in the monastery temple, in front of the altar. That adds up. And the friction from his feet would easily be able to wear away the wood.

I'm not disparaging this monk but he most likely has Plantar Hyperhidrosis - excessive sweaty feet. Look at his toenails in the picture...they're nasty looking.

As to leaving an impression in the wood what do you think a ton of sweat and body oil with pressure and friction in the same spot for several hours a day over several years will do?

I do think it a little excessive to pray that much but if that is what makes him happy, he is not hurting anyone and is striving to better himself so good for him.

Re: Buddhist monk prays all day in the same spot for 20 years, dude left a mark in the floor.
Buddhist prostrations are not prayer in the conventional sense. It's more like a meditation. Prostration is believed to be beneficial as an act of veneration (to the teachings of Buddhism and to life and existence itself), and as an act that diminishes the ego, and as a preparation for meditation, or as a meditation itself. For our religious brethren here at GLP, imagine that you found a way to actually be in the presence of Jesus and to sit at his side and bask in the glow of the shared beatitude -- wouldn't you want to hang out there for a while? It's kind of like that.

For our brethren here at GLP who do not believe in prayer and meditation, or think it a waste of time, or think this Monk has wasted his life, consider this. It takes all kinds to make a world, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to each his own, right? How much time have you spent watching TV in your life? Or reading? Or playing sports? Or having hobbies? This Monk has taken all that time you "wasted" : ) and has instead spent it meditating in blissful awareness, both for the experience and to help keep the teachings of Buddhism alive.

What about spending your life making the world a better place as a result of having been in it.
Much more spiritual that is.
This is about as impressive as looking at the callouses on the hands of a carpenter. In fact, that is more impressive as they have done something useful for the community where this monk has been self absorbed for 20 yrs.

Now how did he waste his life? Buddhist meditation can make you feel extremely good, better than most weed lol. Are you saying his life would have been spent better in the states making cheeseburgers all day long?

As a Monk, he works to preserve the Monastery and its Buddhist teachings -- for the community. Buddhist monasteries are the spiritual heart of most Asian cultures, they are very valuable to the community and are prized by the people. Isn't that something spiritual that makes the world a better place for his having been in it?
