Something definitely died in my heating ducts
Something definitely died in my ducts. This is the first time I have ever had this happen. The guard over the furnace outlet was blown off this summer and I just turned the furnace on for winter and something is fucking dead in there. The smell is horrible. What I need to know is if there is any danger of anything catching fire? I don't want to house burning down while I am sleeping. Other than calling a furnace guy what are my options here?

The dead animal should be in the furnace. It cannot climb the slick walls of the duct.

No sweat, the smell will go away in time when the critter gets dried out. Don't send a small dog in to retrieve the critter tho...

How weird. This just happened to me over the weekend. My husband used a shop vac to suck the critter out. It was just a mouse, but it smelled like a friggin' decaying buffalo.

Take a mirror and flashlight to see if its in the horizontal ducts.
Also remove the back of the furnace where the filter is to see if it's in there.

Also it can't smell forever.

No there is no risk of a fire. No risk at all.

I'm in the heating industry.

Well, if you really do work in the industry then thanks for that advice because I was worried about a house fire.

A mouse that died in a heating duct probably had anthrax, hanta or ebola. Hopefully your furnace didn't turn on, otherwise the viruses have spread all through your house.

This happened to me a number of years ago at work.

Turned out it was a guy trapped in a crawlspace in the wall of my store.

I'll never forget that smell.

This can happen...

Also, did you break up with anyone recently? I heard tell of someone getting dumped 'take a dump' all over the air filter of their car. That way, whenever they used the heater/AC, it smelled of their poo. Awesome.

The first time I turn on my furnace for the winter I usually get a horrid smell for the first few seconds but it quickly goes away.
