Skeptic the First User ID: 1116236 United States 10/04/2010 07:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You realize that the 1910 Portuguese regime is remembered today mostly for its persecution of the Church, which is believed to have triggered a visit from the Mother of Jesus herself: [link to www.fatima.org] --- The Church was the prime target during the revolution: Churches were pillaged, convents attacked and religious harassed. The fiercest and most targeted attack, however, came through the anticlerical legislation the Republic passed. Immediately after the proclamation of the Republic, all convents, monasteries and religious orders were suppressed, the religious themselves were personally expelled and their goods confiscated. The Jesuits were forced to forfeit their Portuguese citizenship. ... The government even interfered with the seminaries, reserving the right to name professors and determine the programs. ... As a result, the majority of the country’s bishops were exiled and many priests were imprisoned. ... Freedom of worship was hindered by numerous restrictions, the carrying out of apostolic works became almost impossible. The religious orders were suppressed or paralyzed. Moreover, little by little the seminaries emptied, and the clergy, impoverished and chained by restrictive laws, became too scarce to maintain a profound religious life. The Catholic press was suffocated, reduced to a few weeklies in the provinces, without serious influence on the masses. --- |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1119640 Portugal 10/04/2010 07:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I didn't know Portugal has been around for ten thousand years. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1119038I made a mistake...lol but we have been around for almost 900 hundred years... Officially Portugal was recognized in 1143, but it's formation as a county was in 1093. In 2093 we can celebrate our first millennium! Unfortunately we won't be there...... |
