Stars Majorly Flickering Tonight in Eastern Sky

I live in Connecticut and for the past probably year now when i step outside at night the stars are flickering like hell. I gotta say that some nights they flicker more than other nights, and I've also noticed that the flickering stars are usually gone by 11 or 12 o'clock. Good eye man everyone needs to see this 5*star post OP!

I always to say something like that.

Stars are shining the shine we see, is from like a million years ago. So if they passed through some magnetic field or gravity thing, it could distort the views.

i dont buy that i think its something deeper than that to be honest. BTW OP I'm looking at it outside right now.

It's heat in the Earths atmosphere!

I just stepped outside, I always notice the stars flickering, but tonight, they're definitely flickering MUCH more than normal. The 2 that stick out to me are "Rigel" and "Betelgeuse" (of the Orion Constellation"). I've also noticed "Sirius" is always flickering like crazy. I wonder if anyone has any insight on the excessive flickering going on right now.

I'd believe that but one night when i was sitting outside watching two stars twinkle they literally started moving they flew to the other side of the sky i swear on my unborn children. idk what it was.

i also seen stars in the eastern flicker to, theirs a formation of 3 stacked and then 2 on each side looking like this

When I read the above, I thought how 60 + year ago I had heard an astronomer at the advent of the Mt. Wilson 100 inch telescope state that the Orion composed of billion upon billions of suns was the brightest spot in the universe.My mind also went to the Bible, which says:"And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring."

We usually think of this text in conjunction with the dark day, the moon turning blood red and the falling of the stars in the 1800’s.But now, with what is happening in the universe, could this text also apply to us now?

But this is not all that is happening.In the sun itself an intense solar flare activity such as they have never before is happening and is getting much worse (see enclosed article).And on Saturn Another thing that is happening without explanation is a massive lightning storm that is being observed.Lightning bolts that are one thousand times stronger than anything seen on earth are being unleashed almost continuously.There have now been 35 episodes of this lightning storm and each one has lasted ten hours.

Those are the same ones I'm talking about, the 3 stacked are "Orion's Belt"

every single night. flashing / flickering, red, green, blue ... been well over a year since i started noticing this and i go out every night to look at the stars. western australia here

Sounds like Orion...google it. The three stacked (if it's Orion) is his belt.

For christs sake people...flickering stars are caused by the motion of our atmosphere. It's more on windy days and less when it's still. It doesn't have to be windy at ground level for star to flicker since the upper atmosphere can be very windy.

The stars flicker/twinkle because the sky is not absolutely clear. I was just out last night (Pennsylvania) around this time looking up too. The last few nights when it has actually been clear out (only a few times over the past 2 weeks) the stars have not been real bright. They seemed rather dim.

I always look to the eastern horizon to see if any of the stars are twinkling/flickering so I can tell whether or not there is a thin haze or extremely thin cloud cover out.

The best way to tell (right now) if there is a thin cloud cover, haze, or some other occurrence in the atmosphere is to observe Jupiter, which is very bright right now. Jupiter will appear to have "spikes" of light coming off of it, instead of looking like a sphere.

I have a question for astronomy buffs...not trying to hijack your thread, OP...it's sort of related. Since the stars as we see them now are actually the light from years ago, would traveling into space (via cameras or as an astronaut) allow us to see the future of the stars? It seems to me that traveling one light year closer would show us the stars as they will appear from Earth one year from now. I know we don't openly have the technology to do so, but would it be true? Any scientific folks know?

Alien engineers are zipping around space trying to replace as many flourescent starters & light bulbs as soon as possible, so the flickerin distruption will in increase as the work continues. Soon, we won't even see the stars, the aliens are putting up scaffolding around the earth to carry out repairs.

You could have a future writing children's books. I can almost see the illustrations.

I think you newbs discounted the most likely explanation:

the atmosphere of the earth is affecting your view of the star light

this is why they all appear to be flickering in the same way, because the atmosphere is distorting their light in the same way.. maybe a bunch of dust or something.. or even high altitude ice crystal formation! being blown in the winds

Yeah for sure, it usually takes a while for my apartment to go dark when I switch off the lights, you know, the time for light to travel or vice versa.

You'll note that the corners of your room are the last to be lite-up!

Yes of course, the TRANSPARENT AIR can at times obstruct your view!

The air's transparency is not constant throughout the whole distance from your eyes to the edge of the atmosphere up there. Different temperatures, different densities, air movement and so forth along the line.

Also, the optics are a little different for the objects you see at horizons versus straight up, because of the atmosphere's curvature around the Earth.

That is, if we agree the Earth is not flat.

I am not a newb. I am a 59-year old who has been watching stars my whole life. They didn't used to FLASH like they do now. There is a big difference between twinkling and flashing.

Too bad it's nearly impossible to film that.
I'd like to see it.

Not Stars, CRAFT and they are there all the time, plus now and then a few extra's.

True. stars doe not change color while you are watching, if they strobe they are craft. And there are mother craft pretending to be stars because we are being moved from our original location, our whole solar system, as part of the ascension of our system.

IMO the GLP explanations for these amazing crystal like 'flickering' light are rather lame...wind? atmosphere?
