Our planet is shrinking, says a Russian geologist. Since its early days the Earth’s average radius has reduced by 585 kilometers.

He says 4.5 billion years ago, when Earth’s surface had just started to solidify, the little blue ball was a bit bigger. Its average radius was 6,956 km, and has since reduced by 585 km.

THE SUN
In 1979, scientists Edy and Boornazian cautiously announced that their studies of solar measurement records from Greenwich Observatory in England, and the US Naval Observatory in Washington, conclusively showed that the sun was shrinking. Its diameter was decreasing at a rate of almost six feet per hour.1

THE MOON
How do astronomers know the moon is shrinking?
They found the lunar equivalent of stretch marks — long, winding ridges called "lobate scarps" — scattered across the moon's surface. The scientists think the scarps are formed by the moon's crust buckling over its shrinking, cooling molten core. It's similar to "the wrinkles that form on an old apple as it dehydrates and shrinks," says Ian O'Neill in Discovery News.
