Just found a very old shortwave radio
Last night I mostly got religious stuff and a crazy guy "broadcasting from his barn in SC" talking about the end of the world lol. Lots of spanish and french stations as well. Are there any of interest I could pick up from where I live (Metro Detroit?)

I suspect that this thread is data mining to identify people who own SW radios, but in case it's not:

I use an inexpensive Grundig. I like the analog tuning and hate digital.

Keep it in a faraday box when not using it. You can thank me for that advice later.

Better yet, get two and keep one in the faraday box always.

The trouble with old radios...the capacitors go bad and you have tubes to contend with.
 Quoting: Endtimewatchman 1127456

Both capacitors can easily be replaced on older radios.

A tube radio would be best because it would be immune to an EMP burst.

They can be found on ebay.

just to add, the big caps are 'electrolytics' the paste in them dries out over time.

when you get new ones muggles, if you need em, make sure you observe the 'polarity'(+ - sign on the caps) or 'kapow', there goes muggles!

capiche?

now have fun twiddlin those dials.

Almost capiche. Here is the one I have:

[link to www.universal-radio.com]

It definitely needs a new antenna but it serves it purpose for now. I'm still new to shortwave. Is there anything else I should replace besides the capacitors and antenna?
