Just found a very old shortwave radio

Oh! How cool! I love shortwave, I hope to get a really good set up soon. Have fun.

Last night I mostly got religious stuff and a crazy guy "broadcasting from his barn in SC" talking about the end of the world lol. Lots of spanish and french stations as well. Are there any of interest I could pick up from where I live (Metro Detroit?)

Tons were made years ago...Zenith Transoceanic...Philco etc. etc.
I use an inexpensive Grundig. I like the analog tuning and hate digital.

You can buy a decent one today for less than 50 bucks.

Keep it in a faraday box when not using it. You can thank me for that advice later.

Better yet, get two and keep one in the faraday box always.

A cookie tin should work fine as a faraday cage.

you have to know when stations come in like am or pm, you can hear allover the world with it, just gotta find the right station at the right time.

I think I got a Japanese station in the other night. and in response to some other comments, no I'm not data mining lol. I did get Alex Jones in too, I was a little surprised by that. Thanks for the info from the rest of you!

The trouble with old radios...the capacitors go bad and you have tubes to contend with.

Both capacitors can easily be replaced on older radios.

A tube radio would be best because it would be immune to an EMP burst.

They can be found on ebay.

just to add, the big caps are 'electrolytics' the paste in them dries out over time.

when you get new ones muggles, if you need em, make sure you observe the 'polarity'(+ - sign on the caps) or 'kapow', there goes muggles!
