My idea for a new law to fix America's economy, and simultaneously improve our overall global disposition.
As I lay on the floor, near sleep, simultaneously hating the poverty stricken life I lead, and the disgusting excess running rampant in our country, I had an idea for a law, that could change millions of lives across our country.

And I know it's inevitable, that big business, as well as you nay-sayers, will call this a socialist idea. But as I have just explained, this is not a socialist idea. It is an idea to combat the gross excess, and over-abundance our country is known (and largely hated internationally) for, particularly dealing with money.

Think of it this way: In this country, horizontal, as well as vertical monopolies are highly illegal. This is but another way of keeping a monopoly in check, only difference being this is concerning the monopoly of money in America.

My idea revolves around the priniciple, that today's major corporations are widely hated, and despised due to their greed; corporations such as the oil companies, Walmart, etc etc etc, the list goes on and on. These companies make UNTOLD amounts of money, in pure profit alone.

Now keep in mind, this idea is still in the very early planning stages, and there is much work to be done; but i believe that a plausible ratio can be found to see where a company's profits turn from acceptable, to ridiculously excessive, using many different variables including, but not limited to: the overall size of the business/total number of buildings/number of employees/Stock prices/how many countries they're in/and so forth.

Implementation of this ratio to today's major corporations could give us a finite mark, a reasonable, rational number to fight the growing glutany of American business.

Now for example, let's say this number is put to a corporation like Exxon-Mobile. Granted I have no idea what this number would be for this company, but say the ratio says that anything over 20 billion in profits in a fiscal year is deamed excessive. So after that mark has been hit, any other profits gained in that fiscal year would be subjugated to my idea for a law, which is 50% of any profits earned after the "Excess Mark" has been hit in a fiscal year, should go to helping America's poverty stricken citizens.

And I'm not talking about grants, or anything like that. I'm talking an entirely new form of civil-help. Perhaps a place similar to Good Will, or Helping Hands, Food Stamps, etc; a place where you can go, of your free will, and register. After registering, this place will be updated on your monitary status (either by your voluntary cooperation[as in you personally updating them on a monthly basis on how much youre making, versus what bills and unexpected expendatures you have that month], or by their own monitoring of your financial state [as in when you sign up for the program, they are granted access to see what you make, and what you owe]).

And now, from those that registered, we can determine those that truly need help. For example:
---A family consisting of a mother and father with 3 children, with a mortgage, car payments, etc...and due to the economy and recent shut-downs and lay-offs, has lost his job of 20 years, while the wife struggles to get more hours, but still fails in earning enough to come anywhere near supporting them. If this family were to be involved in some sort of horrific car wreck, they would be plain and simply put: FUCKED. That is where this comes in. This money acquired from these greedy corporations could be used to cover their extensive medical bills.
---Another scenario could be a single mom of two kids, working two jobs to provide for her children, falls ill. This once disgusting, excessive money that before was only being used to perpetuate the American stereotype the world hates us for: greedy, self-centered, glutaneous pigs; would now be used to pay a determined mother's rent and utility bills for a couple months.

We have all seen it; we have all felt it. The American dream is gone. As it was so ellegantly put in the recent movie "Swing Vote", "We constantly say that this is the greatest country on Earth, then why is it so many of us can't even afford to live here?". We look around and all we see is a poverty stricken wasteland ruled by greedy tyrants no better than Tammany, or Rockafellar. My idea is to change that; change everything. Give back hope to the American people; that there is something worth fighting for.

Well...this is my idea...like I said at the very beginning, I just came up with it no more than 2 hours ago while sleep eluded me. So please, be gentle. haha
What do you think?

This is a noble idea, but as you stated near the beginning of your post, these corporations are only motivated by greed. They would simply project their profits and whatever margin they went over, they would just create that much 'loss'. Here in the real world, it would be more along the lines of 'deferred profit'. It wouldn't be hard to funnel all that extra money into other projects, materials, properties, etc. to detract from the 'excessive' portion of their profits. Right now there is no incentive to do these things because ridiculous profiteering is the name of the game. If that were to change, their methods would change right along with it.

You you want the government to steal from successful corporations because you're too stupid to make money?

Okay, I have thought about it for a couple days, and have also posted this on my facebook as a note, and had a tremendous positive, response to the idea. The word is spreading. So in response, here is my solution as posted on my facebook:

One of the largest problems I see with this idea, is not getting it into circulation and people wanting the change; it's the reluctance of these big businesses that will be effected to cooperate. They will pull every string, do everything imaginable to keep such a law from coming to fruition.

But I believe I have a solution for this. During the process of making it a law, it would be imperative to keep it in the media, by whatever means neccessary. This idea would need all forms of media coverage 24/7, to be kept in the public eye, and on their minds, so that they remained aware of it. This could be achieved by putting an underdog, down-trodden face to the idea (a spokes person if you will) that could captivate American hearts.

They would need to be on television constantly, pleading the American masses of every state, to write to their congressman, DEMANDING they vote yes to this idea. It would work even better, if a so-called "media stunt" could be arranged so that on live TV, in the middle of the supreme court, that every single letter mailed to every single congressman was shown. This way, there would be no way for them to deny that they received an imense number of letters regarding the issue, and force them to vote the way the American populace wants them to vote, not just the way their corporate backers want.

This much attention would also cause enough of the public eye to be turned on them, so that they would be unable to bury their profit margins, and hide them within their losses or deffered profits.

The American populace is what helped these companies become what they are today. So many hard working citizens have poured countless dollars into these companies, which is infact the American way; but I think it's about time these companies wake up, and give back to THE PEOPLE that made them what they are; the exact same people that continue to fascilitate their growth. I think it's time the American people were rewarded for their undying belief in capitalism.

Not only would this greatly raise the overall morale of our country in general, but it would also continue the improvement of the economy, almost like a fail-safe for our economy - A company succeeds, and reaches a point to where its profits become a ridiculous, excessive amount, so a portion of that money is given BACK to the people who need it most, which in turn will be recycled into the economy, promoting further growth.

Like I said....the "Capitalistic Economy Fail-Safe".
