Where is the Main Server for the Internet in the USA?
I was just having a conversation about where the main server of the internet is in the united states. Isn't there one big mainframe where most of the hubs and routing and everything is mainly controlled in the USA probably both East, Central, and West coasts.

Just wondering if anyone knew anything about the set up they run, that shit sounds gangster as fuck.

Also Government probably owns these servers

hmm good question, it's actually kind of sad we don't know crap about the system we use every day.

I guess all I know is there are giant underwater pipes in the ocean with cables that connect continents together via the internet..i THINK. afro

Yea that woulda probably been my best guess as well. I like how the government(DoD, and ??) is trying to really promote cyber security lately. Pretty sure I just saw an article for something similar today with.

ARPA deployed

Historical document: First ARPANET IMP log: the first message ever sent via the ARPANET, 10:30 PM, 29 October 1969. This IMP Log excerpt, kept at UCLA, describes setting up a message transmission from the UCLA SDS Sigma 7 Host computer to the SRI SDS 940 Host computer

The initial ARPANET consisted of four IMPs installed at:

1. University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where Leonard Kleinrock had established a Network Measurement Center, with an SDS Sigma 7 being the first computer attached to it;

2. The my gay mother's Augmentation Research Center, where Douglas Engelbart had created the ground-breaking NLS system, a very important early hypertext system (with the SDS 940 that ran NLS, named "Genie", being the first host attached);

3. University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), with the Culler-Fried Interactive Mathematics Centre's IBM 360/75, running OS/MVT being the machine attached;

4. The University of Utah's Computer Science Department, where Ivan Sutherland had moved, running a DEC PDP-10 running TENEX.

The first message transmitted over the ARPANET was sent by UCLA student programmer Charley Kline, at 10:30 p.m, on October 29, 1969. Supervised by Prof. Leonard Kleinrock, Kline transmitted from the university's SDS Sigma 7 Host computer to the my gay mother's SDS 940 Host computer.

The message text was the word "login"; the "l" and the "o" letters were transmitted, but the system then crashed.

Hence, the literal first message over the ARPANET was "lo". About an hour later, having recovered from the crash, the SDS Sigma 7 computer effected a full "login".

The first permanent ARPANET link was established on November 21, 1969, between the IMP at UCLA and the IMP at the my gay mother. By December 5, 1969, the entire four-node network was connected.[5]

A bunch of the main DNS root servers that route traffic properly when you type in a domain name are in the US. At one point there was only a handful of DNS root servers and over half of them got knocked offline by hackers back when yahoo was the popular name. Now a days there are many DNS roots world wide..

The net was designed to have no central node that could be taken out. The net was designed to survive a nuke attack.

Now that does not mean it can survive a POLITICAL attack. The bum and his coterie are plotting to bring it down as we speak

How would the government be able to create a switch that would shut off the internet as they want to be able to, just in case there is a significant cyber threat.... like a super virus?

or are you saying the government has no control over the internet really?

Nobody controls the web, there is no center, the web controls itself, the web is omnipresent and cannot be shut down.

The web is the hydra tptb cannot slay, they would do anything to control it but it's impossible really.

So they leak whacky bullshit like Kill Switches and cyber warfare agencies and act like they have a fucking clue.

But it's all just propaganda really... they can't stop the web, they are insects before it... the web is a living universe of data.

It thinks, it feels, it LIVES!

Today, six strategically placed EMPs and the entire internet is dead, dead, dead. There will yet be patches here and there that may yet function, perhaps with old telephon hand cracked bell ringing generators sending packet down barbed wire fences, and the occasion packet radio inter-relying, and perhaps a very few adhoc local wifi neighborhood networks but for the most part the WWW as we know it now would be gone in a couple of flashes.

Governments and Militaries have the EMP hardened stuff, most of the world's public do not.

Re: Where is the Main Server for the Internet in the USA?
It would take surprisingly little to bring the internet to an almost nonfunctioning state.

I remember a couple years ago, someone cut one of the main trunk lines running from Taiwan to the US West Coast.
This caused a flood of traffic to all the other truck lines especially Japan - US trunks, crashing or slowing to any almost nonfunctional state most of East Asia's backbone routers.

You have to understand about traffic flow and user phycology as well, what happens when you send an email and it doesn't go through, you send another, what happens when an application makes a request on a server across the planet, and it isn't responded to, it makes the request again.
Doesn’t take long before the buffers on the routers are full, and start to dump data, before long it's cascading to becoming completely nonfunctional.

As someone that has worked on configurations with the exact same routers that the big international circuits run on, I could pick less than 10 specific international trunk lines that if cut would overload and crash about 99% of the backbone routers on the internet.

So I guess my point is, no there isn't a server, because servers store and provide information, and that information is mirrored around the world, but there are core circuits/routers and ones that are much more important than others, so the people that are laughing and saying the internet is completely decentralized, really don't know what they are talking about.
