any computer experts on?
I've got an old laptop that had Vista on, so decided to upgrade it to Windows 7 and give it to my daughter.

Things went well, until i tried to activate the shite. I bought the software online from an OEM site, but bought the FULL version instead of an upgrade version. why that should make ANY difference at all I don't know, but I think that is why it won't accept the code that came with the software bundle.

I have 4 reloads of the 30 day trial left, so I'm OK for 150 days, but I want it to last MUCH longer than that hopefully.

I found an old vista key using a keyfinder program, and managed to delete it from the registry, but it's still not letting me activate the shite even though that key isn't in the registry any more.

any ideas?

Oh, and Gates, die you Mother Fucker! jerkit

any help would be appreciated.

you're gonna tell me i have to do a clean install, aren't you? suicide

lol

please, someone come up with a nifty way around this shit.

I've sent tickets to the online company requesting help, but they have my money now, don't they? probably won't hear another world from them. chuckle

Call the retailer and get your money back. If you plan to use an OS, buy it directly from the company. You probably have some Chinese boot-legged crap the retailer paid a nickel for.

If you installed it and it accepted the key and starts up fine but will not let you register it through the internet.
Call the toll free number they give you to get it activated.

Been there and done that and they guide you through until it is activated.

If you bought the full version and not the upgrade, you may have to reformat the drive and load from scratch.

Microsoft does some pretty stupid shit, and it should not matter if you are upgrading with a full version purchase, but I have come across a few systems where it does.

Format the drive and reload.

exactly the same as the message I get when i try to activate.

I'm waiting on several tickets to that company now, and I just sent them an e mail too.

I've got 150 days I know, so it's no great panic. Just thought one of you might know a work around. I'll probably end up ringing MS to get it sorted

If you call Microsoft$$ and bitch enough they will give you a new activation key for the upgrade. No issue for them, your the one that gets screwed because you could have saved by not buying the Full version.

Pretty much lose lose... for you the consumer.

Use windows 7 loader (google it) (torrent/irc/p2p). You can activate your win7 and install the serial # you have. Its a backdoor way of doing it, but:

1. windows 7 will be activated
2. you will be using a s/n you actually paid for.

Try Linux.

It works on any platform, is remarkably inexpensive for a fully supported version, and is available as a free download.

Partition your drive and leave Vista on one and install Win 7 on the other. You should get 30 days to activate so if it doesn't work contact the vendor.

You could register using the telephone method. I've upgraded mine from Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate .. installed on one machine and loaded on a second machine. It stated the registry code failed, so I called up and went through the scenario to get the second computer legit ... try that first. If it doesn't work, recommend you going to Ubuntu 10.10 ... software's pretty good.

It's OK, we all learn.

There's some good advice in this thread if you still want to crack the key. Remove WAT is excellent, removes the key allowing you to use 7 permanently. Otherwise, if you want to do it the right way, you're going to have to jump through hoops. Up to you.
