This guy is coming to India and expects to get big orders for the very same US firms who are seeking to sell the very same planes to China!! This is some audacity!!! Well as long as our Govt. keeps on placing huge contracts to US firms without any reciprocal commitment from US to be at least sensitive to India's interests, where is the need for US to be sensitive to India's interests?

Do not buy american planes for the MMRCA! Go with the Europeans and get full Transfer Of Technology and get them to agree to set up a production line in India. In the end, everyone looks out for themselves, and the Europeans can do the same as the Americans. India needs to get the Technology and develop it's own aerospace industry. India must stand proudly on her own one day, this must be national urgent priority number one. The crooked babus in Delhi need to be voted out ASAP as they are incapable of formulating and promoting India's national security interests. Obama and others take India for granted as we have a proven history of gutless national governments. Why blame others for your own problems? As a country, do not trust another country! I could go on and on.

It should be interesting to note that Russia too has been supplying advanced offensive weapons to China for decades. Reality is that India doesn't have the kind of leverage over U.S./Russia that China does.

We should remain pragmatic and realistic and look to counter any threats. The only concern here is that this *may* signal the ending of the Western arms embargo on China which would enable the Chinese to gain a technological edge over India in a decade / decade and a half.

The way things are going for the Democratic Party in the US, largely due to the performance of Mr. Obama (good with speeches only), there is a good chance that the Republicans will have the next President of the US. The Republicans are also expected to win a majority in the Senate elections at the end of 2010. So, it is likely that Obama's request to export the C-130 to china will be turned down.
But India must learn a lesson from this and not pin it's hopes on any particular country. She must do what is in her self interests.

In response to a comment made about the C-130 being based on obsolete '50s tech is somewhat accurate in regards to overall design/airframe. My question, what high tech navigation, communication, electronic countermeasures,radars, etc would be included that could be reveresed engineered to come and haunt us? Also, China has had problems developing engines for their indigenous fighters, could US tech be reverse engineered as well? Also, what advanced composite materials would be handed over as well?
The C-130 from the 60's isn't in the same league as today's high tech uber modern version.

Besides, Russia has a similiar sized plane with almost double the cargo capacity and longer range that China could either buy or pirate anyways. Russia always has made good cargo aircraft. So to my armchair, obese, gravy and beer soaked brain- this issue isn't about cargo, it is about tech transfer. The C-130 is just the benign "vehicle" to provide it. A reverse trojan horse, so to speak.
