From there the summer monsoon plods northward to soak the baking plains and irrigate vital breadbasket regions that feed 1.1 billion people before arriving at the foot of the Himalayas in August. Forecasting this complex meteorological process has always been an obsession within India, but this year the world will be watching. Changes in the monsoon cycle can shrink India's total grain harvest by up to 20 percent, creating a shortfall of 30 million metric tons. During India's last crop failure, in 2002, the country had a massive reserve to fall back on. "Now," says Usha Tuteja, an agricultural economist at Delhi University, "we don't have enough buffer stocks to make up for one bad year." See, Indians had crop failures as has China and Thailand. Now, the MSM sounded an alarm bell in 2008, but Americans, and the Western world in general sat idle by and did nothing to prepare. See, Americans don't see how this is going to effect them and it is! Very deeply! Our food prices are set to skyrocket because commodities traders are ready to pounce on this sort of news. Philippines User ID: 1003925 Philippines 10/18/2010 09:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here is a likely scenario.. Most rice produced in the Philippine is exported because of its quality. (This is how it is going on now.) The Philippines imports a LOT of rice from Thailand and other SE Asian nations because it is cheaper than the rice produced in the Philippines, and to meet consumption needs. If the Philippine crop were to be destroyed, the farmers will keep what remains for themselves and for planting. Hopefully they don't need to buy more seed. The rice commodity goes way up due to demand not being met. Philippine rice is a sought after commodity. The Philippines works to buy rice from other neighboring countries, and this is the crux. Will the neighboring countries have the rice? Is there enough stored rice in the Philippines? What nations will suffer from not getting Philippine rice? There is a major Asian rice trading network, but there comes a point where all demands cannot be met Separate science and government. |
