I wish there had been half the resources available to use back in the dark ages when I started teaching before the advent of "frameworks," and standardized testing. If only I'd had just a computer and a digital camera back then! (long sigh) |

But I do believe we have crossed the line from education to 'training' in schools. The children are trained for a test, rather than being taught to learn, think and discover. This is the main reason I homeschool my children, to help them learn to learn, to ask questions and seek answers, to solve problems creatively, and hopefully to help change this world for the better someday. Although more and more lately I have realized that while this is intended to be a gift, it may also be a terrible burden in the world we are currently living in. "Accept the children with reverence, educate them with love, send them forth in freedom.” – Rudolf Steiner "Violence simply is not radical enough, since it generally changes only the rulers but not the rules. What use is a revolution that fails to address the fundamental problem: the existence of domination in all its forms, and the myth of redemptive violence that perpetuates it?" - Walter Wink |

There, we kids could ask a question, we'd all be shuffled off to the appropriate college teacher and get it answered. No chit. Imagine, just imagine. Then, six or seven years in a one room school. There, you progressed at your own rate-class/year did not matter. The division there was kindergarten to 6th grade, and 7th through 12th on the other side of the tiny school house. (Two teachers, under 30 kids total). This is how I ended up reading college level (with comprehension, mind you) at age 10. From there, I ended up in your modern type school-hundreds of kids over three grades. It was a miserable experience overall, the work was easy and nothing really got me engaged. Pulled As and Bs with 10 minute reviews of texts and was bored out of my mind. I am afraid my own child may have his creativity and natural curiosity squashed by the education system. It's a big fear, he's smart and obviously also a divergent thinker. |

He is asking about space, time and distance. The discussion covers the solar system, the galaxy, and finally the universe. It was all about numbers-how far away is the sun? The moon? What are the stars? How far away are there? How long would it take to get there? What's a light year? How far is that? Do the stars have planets and people too? Do they look up at their stars? How many days in a light year? How many seconds in a day? Yes, a serious conversation for a four year old, don't you think? Had me scrambling, let me tell you, haha |

The main portion was about a general (or generals' daughter?) taking over the US (sort of a coup) and how that change lead to a different way of schooling. It focused on four or five "delinquent" types and what they created when allowed to run with their own ideas. Amazing read, honest. Now, the trouble is, I *thought* the title was "The General's Daughter", but apparently this is not correct. Does any of this ring any bells with you? I would dearly love to ferret out a copy of this, if I can figure out the title.......you would find many parallels between that novel, and this video :) |
