the practice of wearing the burka and niqab is more rooted in Middle Eastern culture than in religious teachings. There is nothing in the Qur'an that stipulates women must cover their faces.

Wow. Oh well. Good news is good news. Way to go er, um, uh... Syria.

Darling, I'm not expecting them to dress completely Western with mini skirts et al; if you can't see how the burqa is meant to debase and control women then I can't help you.

If they want to live in the Western world and in our cultures they do need to dress in a manner more fitting with Western culture. There is reason old sayings are old...they have truth in them...."When in Rome, do as the Romans do". Again, not expecting them to adopt the "trampy" look as even I do not wear the trampy look.

In Britain, Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman spoke out earlier this week to defend a woman’s right to wear burkas.

She insisted women were ‘empowered’ by the freedom to wear the veils.

How do you know they are wearing it of their own volition and not under threat of abuse from family or spouse?

Also, how do you identify who is under the burqa? How do you even know it is a woman under there?

If they want to drive a vehicle it is a hazhard as it creates a ton of blind spots.

How would you feel if no one outside of your immediate family was allowed to see your face?

They are not "free" to wear them. Their low IQ husbands who suck the Imam's dick have ordered them to wear that shit under penalty of a severe beating and possibly death. Did Spellman's politically correct handlers require her to say that?

Re: First Egypt, now Syria bans the burqa
For some of you that object to this ban - here's the opinion of Muslims in Egypt - it is a hot topic here as well as many muslims do not agree or even feel comfortable with women wearing the face veil even:

[link to www.google.com]

CAIRO — A leading cleric at Egypt's prestigious Al-Azhar Mosque on Wednesday applauded France's ban on the face veil worn by some devout Muslim women, saying the niqab harmed Islam's image.

Abdel Muti al-Bayyumi, a member of an influential council of clerics at al-Azhar, said the niqab, a full-face veil that leaves an opening for the eyes, "has no basis in Islamic law and there is nothing in the Koran or Sunna that supports it."

...

"I want to send a message to Muslims in France and Europe. The niqab has no basis in Islam. I used to feel dismayed when I saw some of the sisters (in France) wearing the niqab. This does not give a good impression of Islam."

...

Al-Azhar, which runs the leading Sunni Muslim university, has opposed the face veil in Egypt and banned it in female-only classes in affiliated schools. Most Muslim women in Egypt wear a hijab, which covers the hair and neck.
