A male nurse who vanished during a medical trial in which he was infected with malaria has been found.
Matthew Lloyd turned up in the Netherlands, 12 days after an international search was started over fears he might have just hours to live.
But in a startling twist last night it was revealed that the 35-year-old was being investigated by police over an alleged sex attack.
Mr Lloyd, who contacted Dutch police on Monday evening, has been admitted to hospital for treatment.
The hunt was launched when the nurse, from Southampton, failed to attend the second session of a clinical trial where he was due to receive an antidote to the killer disease.
Members of the public were asked to help find him over concerns that Mr Lloyd could have just hours to live unless he received the necessary drugs.
But yesterday, as his family were celebrating him being found, it was revealed Mr Lloyd had vanished while on police bail for an alleged double sex attack.
He had been arrested as part of an inquiry into claims by a 20-year-old woman who said she was twice indecently assaulted on the street as she walked home in Southampton.
Her alleged attacker ran off when she fought him, but is said to have followed her and brazenly struck again.
