A 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck off South Pagai in the Mentawais, sending a 3 metre tsunami, which has reportedly trashed Macaronis Resort. Charter boat Midas was hit by Freedom in the bay and caught on fire. Everyone jumped overboard and all guests are safe on board D'Bora. More to come ...

Australian Rick Hallett has told the Nine Network he was on his charter boat with guests when a two-to three-metre wall of water rolled into their bay in the Mentawai Islands.

They threw anything that floated into the water including, surfboards and fenders, and jumped in.

Mr Hallett said several people were carried 200 metres inland, while others scrambled up trees, and amazingly no-one was killed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a 7.7-magnitude temblor struck at a depth of 20 kilometers at 1.42am AEDT.

It was centered on a small island off the coast of Sumatra, where a massive earthquake and tsunami hit in 2004.

A tsunami watch was issued for Indonesia, saying waves were possible within a few hundred kilometres of the epicenter.

However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said historical data suggested any wave it created would not be destructive.

At least five towns in the provinces of Bengkulu and West Sumatra were badly jolted, officials and witnesses said, as were the nearby Mentawai islands.

"Everyone was running out of their houses," said Sofyan Alawi, a resident in the city of Padang, adding that, with loudspeakers from mosques blaring out tsunami warnings, the roads leading to surrounding hills were quickly jammed with cars and motorcycles.

"We kept looking back to see if a wave was coming," said 28-year-old resident Ade Syahputra.

Areas closest to the epicenter of the quake were sparsely populated, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, said Ade Edward, a disaster management agency official.

Surfing in Mentawai's is always a good experience. I wonder if this will impact on the surf breaks up there? The 2004 quake re-arranged some of the topography, not sure whether some of the existing breaks will be as good as before.. here's hoping there's no change..
