Thank you for this thread OP. Im opting for the bug out rough it in the wilderness option. Where im located in Texas, there is farm land in every direction outside this city. There are also many natural preserves, lakes, caverns, and forest areas which host plenty of wildlife and natural springs, etc. There are many hills covered in row after row of tree's and bush. Recently this year, Ive read that there is actually an overpopulation of deer in my area.

I plan to start making some plans, big time.

All water is contaminated with either pollutants or deadly microbes, so you need to either have some purification tablets, something to boil with or a good filter. If you have nothing you can make your own filter by poking wholes in the bottom of a bottle, layering in the bottle with gravel, sand, dirt, grass and char coal.(harder to say than show) You can boil water in a tin can or by burning a whole in a log like a bowl, filling the bowl with water, then taking hot rocks from the fire and boiling the water with the rocks in the log bowl."

You're forgetting the gifts of the Ocean though.

If you know how to fish, and know what kinds of plants are edible, and know the caves, you'll have a better chance than most. Well if you're on the coast that is. If all water runs out, fish are a huge resource of fresh water. Also knowing what plants and worms/insects are edible.

Everyone and their brothers on these forums I've seen over the years plan to "bugout" to the hills, hunting. I often wonder how long the game will last.

The ocean, however, if you know how to do it, will last a lot longer than game in the hills. But you have to have back up. Friends all over, waiting to pounce on those who want to steal your fish, and those will be many.

You would have to have an insane, almost crazy survival instinct to get through a scenario like OP suggested. I wouldn't go anywhere NEAR the highways in a SHTF scenario.

Don't forget that the Mexicans work the fields and the land and they will know every source of edible plant life. You have to be one step ahead and protect it or you and your family will die.

Let's hope it never happens.

I read one-second after too and just thought the book lacked some very basic important information.

Having worked in the Public Health sector for a number of years one has to pay attention to water and the disposal of fecal matter - along with the disposal of dead bodies.

In the book they had people digging graves and killed off most of the live stock for food. One needs livestock for a variety of reasons even if it is to help plow and fertilize a field, pull a cart or ride on.

With regard to the dead, they should have just dug a cremation pit. Less labor intensive, less risk for disease and more sanitary.

In the book they just used up all of their frozen meat immediately following the event rather then smoke and dry it so it could be used sparingly in nutritional soups.

In fact, public food that was available in the markets and stores should have been rationed from the onset and that is where there should have been guards set out to protect it.

In the book there was no one really looking at what needed to be done from a public health perspective. A very serious oversight IMO.

As the EMP event happened in the spring they had a whole season to prepare for winter - but really slacked off and lacked foresight.

Available water from rivers, lakes, even swimming pools can easily be used by being passed through water filtration systems. Why wasn't that discussed?

Solar panels and solar generators allow for electricity. Although in the book it was an EMP that did the damage. But not so with other disaster type events.

However, microwave ovens are also faraday cages and grounded can protect various electronics and batteries. It's easy to pick up used microwave ovens at the town dump - store some walkie talkies, batteries, flashlights and even a flash drive and small computer inside.

If growing food - labor is needed just to make this work. People need to work together.

There are a number of ways to be efficient and grow mass amounts of food in small spaces - knowing how to do aquaponics utilizing white PVC piping and a gravity flow system would really be useful. Black PVC is used for sewage.

The real problem though right from the onset is die off from people who are dependent upon meds to survive. These folks are generally the first to go.

I also have the attitude that everyone is of value - meaning this type of event can also bring out the best in someone. It doesn't have to be the Mad Max scenario - but likely will be in densely populated areas.

In any event, I'm also of the opinion that god has a plan. We don't have to know what the plan is to do our small part. And each of us will be exactly where we need to be to fulfill that plan.

If the world were to come to the Mad Max scenario then I wouldn't mind passing on sooner then later. There are other dimensions far more spiritually fulfilling then this one.

Another tip. Buy several seal-tight plastic garbage cans and store food in that... bury them in different locations. Put the same items in each container and also put the container in large heavy duty plastic to further protect from weather and critters. Just keep what is needed inside and know how to get to storage area in winter... put plywood over the top and then some dirt, grass or ground cover.

Anyway, these are just a few thoughts this thread triggered. Just remember these few things. Shelter, water, sanitation, food. I knew a man lost at sea who survived for 3 months on a few tablespoons of rice soaked in seawater. That was his daily meal.. along with rain water. Rice is a great staple and can be stored in those large dog food containers with sealed lids.

The NEXT alignment of this object, Earth and the Sun will be it's closest ever!

So close it will be between the Earth and the Sun.

That alignment will be exact on September 26th 2011.

2. Begin stocking your remote retreat location with emergency food and supplies NOW (before the event) with enough long term storage food to last your family 1 or more years. Be sure to also store non hybrid seeds so you can plant and grow your own food for the future.
Also be sure to have a way to purify and filter water.

3. Have first aid, medical supplies and personal hygiene items for your whole family to last 1 or more years.

4. Have hunting and fishing supplies and self protection supplies all ready.

5. Plan on being in your remote cabin/camping area with your family for months or maybe even years if the worse case happens.

6. A portable shortwave radio powered by solar or wind up power may be of some use if someone, somewhere in the world is able to transmit by batteries or solar....maybe.

7. Plan for not having electricity anywhere in the world for months or maybe even years after the event.

Possible Greatest Dates of Danger

September 26th to November 22nd.

Know that because of earthquakes, bridges and over passes may fail so if you are not in your place of safety before the 17th of September for your "family vacation" you may not be able to get to your location by driving.

Also know that all food and supplies will be near impossible to get after the event for months or years so if you do not stock up before hand you will be without and your family may starve to death.

All ATM's will fail and all banking will stop so whatever you have in the way of cash and coin will be it when the power fails and after that you can kiss the rest goodbye.

If you do not heed this warning and do not stock up on food and supplies and do not leave for your safe location prior to the possible earth changes and events you can expect the following.

1. If the power goes out it may not come back on for maybe months or even years.

2. All of the food will be gone from all the stores within hours and will not be restocked.

3. The tap water will soon stop and no longer flow.

4. People who are hungry and beginning to starve will start roaming in armed gangs looting for food.

5. After all of the food is gone the armed gangs will turn into cannibals and will begin to butcher and eat humans for food. (zombie apocalypse style)

I hope you heed this warning and immediately stock your retreat location with food, tools and supplies and plan for a 2 week family vacation starting the weekend of the 17th of September.

If those 2 weeks come and go with no problems then you have just had a nice vacation and stocked your retreat well for the future but IF the problems do appear as some suggest, you and your family will then be safe in a remote stocked retreat location and safe from the marauding hoards of starving people and you will all have a chance to survive.

But if you do NOT heed this suggestion and these events indeed DO happen and you have taken NO precautions and have NOT prepared in any way to take care of yourself and your family and the events in this warning DO develop as many expect they will,then you need to brace yourself and your family to face starvation, hardship and future attack from starving, armed, vicious, crazed cannibals roving in wild gangs hunting human beings for food like zombies.

So, that's it.

You can plan for the worse and hope for the best by being proactive and take fast action NOW to make your family safe in the event these things do happen.

OR take your chances by doing NOTHING with the risk of having to watch your wife and children suffer and die for lack of food or even the worse outcome, that being death by the hands of violent gangs of starving zombie cannibals.

The choice is yours and yours alone.
