Update: Evacuation zone at Indonesia's Merapi volcano is set at 10 kilometers; 19,000 ordered to flee
Farmers asked to flee volcano
YOGYAKARTA (Indonesia) - INDONESIA warned residents living in the shadow of the nation's most active volcano to evacuate on Tuesday or risk being killed by a major eruption.

Authorities put an area 10km around the crater of Mount Merapi on red alert on Monday, ordering 19,000 people to flee with the possibility of the mountain blowing its top looking increasingly likely.

But many defiantly ignored the order, remaining on their farms, as several minor eruptions sent lava spewing down Merapi's southern slopes. 'Mount Merapi is still on red alert,' government volcanologist Surono warned.

Scientists warn pressure inside Indonesian volcano could lead to deadly blast; residents evacuated - AP

Indonesia warns pressure building inside volatile volcano, evacuates residents near mountain

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) — Pressure building beneath a lava dome in the mouth of Indonesia's most volatile volcano could trigger one of its deadliest blasts in years, scientists warned Tuesday, as residents living along the slopes were moved to temporary camps.

Mount Merapi has seen increased volcanic activity in recent days and officials have raised the alert level for the 9,737-foot (2,968-metre) high mountain to its highest level, said government volcanologist Surono, who uses only one name.

It last erupted in 2006, when it sent an avalanche of blistering gases and rock fragments racing down the mountain that killed two people. A similar eruption in 1994 killed 60 people, while 1,300 people died in an eruption in 1930.

An avalanche of rocks spilled down Merapi's trembling slopes before dawn Tuesday and gusts of hot ash shot 150 feet (50 meters) into the air as the mountain groaned and rumbled.
