Sports are the Opiate of the masses - Brainwashing in action
If you team wins then the whole town is happy

If not, then everyone is bitching and griping

they control your emotions and you are so entranced you don't even realize it.

I don't know anyone that gives a shit about sports. That's about the least entertaining thing to watch, right up there with reality TV.

Professional sports, perhaps, but as an activity, sports has given a lot of youth something constructive to do.

The real problem with sports, as discussed extensively by Noam Chomsky, is that people know more about their favorite team/sport than they do about politics. People care and know all these useless stats and yet refuse to become even slightly educated about the real shit going on in the world.

Nothing new about this .... the Roman games/slaughters in the coloseum, the Mayan ball games ... all designed to dumb down the masses and keep them from looking too closely at real issues going on.

...WE FURTHER DISTRACT THEM WITH AMUSEMENTS, GAMES, PASTIMES, PASSIONS, PEOPLE’S PALACES …. SOON WE SHALL BEGIN THROUGH THE PRESS TO PROPOSE COMPETITIONS IN ART, IN SPORT IN ALL KINDS:

these interests will finally distract their minds from questions in which we should find ourselves compelled to oppose them. Growing more and more unaccustomed to reflect and form any opinions of their own, people will begin to talk in the same tone as we because we alone shall be offering them new directions for thought … of course through such persons as will not be suspected of solidarity with us.

Worship of sports, women, pets, men, cars, nation, exercise, your family, your mate, history, politics, etc. Anything set above Truth = same old idolatry thing.

You should read the book : "how soccer explains the world". It talks about how soccer is used to further certain agendas in different countries. In certain places, games are used to cover assasinations by the mob. In Britain,it's just nationalism well, in every country,it's nationalism. Nationalism sucks. I don't care if you think your city or your country is better than mine. They're all ruled by elites that don't care about you. Except maybe Iceland.. I have a soft spot for this country right now.

People who actually do enjoy watching sports.. Do you know what their argument to this is??

"it's a hobby" or, "you gotta be interested in something!"

No, bitch, you're a sheep.

What cracks me up is hearing a bunch of 300+ lb slobs who can't even climb a flight of stairs without wheezing -- going on about how "We beat the other team".

No, you sat on your lard ass.

Cake and a Circus, nothing more. Statist meaningless crap!
I cannot stand these fat goons who get excited over Feetsball and Bakkaball, groidians running hither and yon to... *drum roll*... catch a ball?
Hell my dog can do as much.
Cake and Circus, Opiates to dumb the cattle down.
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh.. Mooooooooooooooooooooo!
Consume, do not think, Consume, do not question, Consume, be entertained.
Something is wrong with you if you do not follow the herd!

A guy just came into where I work, and is rooting for the Baltimore Ravens. Keep in mind, we are in Texas. He says "I really hope dey pull through!"
No you don't, you just don't have anything else to talk about. Weather is more tangible to talk about.

Bread and circus. But take away the bread and nobody will care about who wins or loses anymore. Notice how much food is a part of these rediculous celebrations and get togethers.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22152403

Weather is full of wonderment, it affects our daily lives, and invites us to ponder all of nature around us.

Talking about weather ties us to our agricultural ancestors, and causes us to learn about the greater world around us, while uniting us in our common circumstances.

Discussing weather opens up new friendships, causes no strife or division.

Team sports, on the other hand, create artificial divisions and are nothing but an entirely unnatural construct to distract and amuse us... while enthusiasts waste huge amounts of money to eat, drink, grow fatter and more sedentary, all the while hating someone else for absolutely no reason.

Weather talk uplifts.

Sports talk degrades.

If you don't like it don't watch it.

Want to change people? Like an extraordinary life and lead by example. Sitting behind your keyboard and calling people sheep accomplishes absolutely nothing. You're rarely going to change someone by insulting them.

Nerds are fundamentally unable to grasp the concept of sports, because theyre usually introverts. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with sports or liking them just because you can't understand

 Quoting: jack of all trades

Physically fit people who actually accomplish athletic achievements of their own -- even noncompetitive accomplishments like 'just running, 'just' working out, or 'just' hiking -- seldom feel any urge to self-identify with some sports team, unless they themselves actually are or were on that team.

There's no need to! They ARE athletes.

Obese slobs, on the other hand, often feel compelled to get some sort of artificial "fix" of sports "manliness" by sitting around and eating while mindlessly going on about what "we" (meaning some guys on the television, whom they do not even know) are doing.
