OTOC User ID: 1142266 United Kingdom 10/28/2010 01:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | otoc or sickscent this will not effect us at all??? Quoting: huhh 1028308sorry, but i'm just learning all this cool stuff..thanx Let's see.. Use your brain here... The CME exploded off of the backside of the sun (almost 180 degrees around) the cme is travelling away from us, and started travelling away from us at about 98 million miles (give or take a few million). Ask yourself these questions: Will it hit us? If not, why not? If so, why will it? If not, what effect will it have? If so, what effect do you think it will have? Hmm still not conveying my meaning properly.. It wouldn't be game over, I'm hoping you're just taking the piss out of the person who thought it would be. OTOC User ID: 1142266 United Kingdom 10/28/2010 01:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Lol, if this was Earth facing, after eruption, we wouldn't be here chatting now, lmao. 15 minutes to electron impact, 24 to 48 for heavy element impact. I couldn't see the magnetosphere weathering an impact of this size. Quoting: TheWatcher8 minutes to x-ray impact, if there was a flare - no flash on the EIT images make that unlikely, but not impossible - wouldn't of been above a C class flare - No problem there. That rules out a large proton storm as well, and the change in the electron count would also not really be noticable against background noise, so no problems there. This rules out 'immediate to short term' effects from the flare, if there was one. Now onto the longer term (24-96 hours) from the velocity of the blast looks like if it was pointed at us would take around 78 hours to arrive, so mid velocity, the density would drop significantly. Can't say much about the magnetic properties of it but very highly likely it is not swung hugely one way or the other. What we have here then is no different to what we get hit by a lot each year due to coronal holes solar particle stream. So no big geomagnetic storm, likely Kp6 max. To someone not paying any attention to these things, they won't notice anything different at all if it did hit. And by the way.. It's actually a pretty medium sized cme. ... Don't want to step on your toes here or anything - but that is no-where near what could be considered a 'kill shot', our computers, satellites, power... everything would be unaffected. TheWatcher (OP) User ID: 997697 United States 10/28/2010 02:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Lol, guess you have more faith than I do. There is no way, something this large wouldn't effect us. I personally would place this as a larger CME, and yes, that is what it will be. Something this large will also affect the surrounding areas of instabilities. How many times have we seen one event, trigger another? Let me ask you this, if it is no big deal like you say, why no new data from either sat in line of sight??, if as you say, just another ho hum event. Someone in Nasa is playing it safe lol. But I have spent enough time on this, you guys have fun, |
