It's a hearing aid and she is checking to see if it is working. Batteries didn't last long back then.

batteries?
do you believe that batteries were invented by that year?

Batteries??? Why would she need a hearing aid?? She was going to a SILENT MOVIE!!!!!

So why would someone be holding the microphone to her ear? LOL. It does not make sense.

Therefore the hearing aid theory is wrong, despite the similar, coincidental appearance of whatever she is holding to hearing aids available at the time.

If you are going to go "out there" and claim time travel, you could just as easily come up with the theory that she is not a time traveler at all, but is working for Tesla and testing a device for him that was stolen by a group of Edison thugs and the thechnology was buried for 50 years.

Yes and they had Hearing Aids they were about that size back then.

The black part of the hearing aid isn't what was held to the ear, though-just the small ear piece.

Re: Charlie Chaplin confirms time travel in this movie from 1928
Another option is a stranded time traveler who wants to be rescued, but not contaminate the timeline. So he does something which would be meaningless to a contemporary, but which would jump out at someone from the future. In one such classic story, the protagonist is stranded in the 1930s. He runs an ad in a newspaper with a mushroom cloud, and the caption "All the Talk of Our Market," ATOM. In the future, they know approximately when he is, check the records, and find this anomaly. [link to hearing.siemens.com]

Siemens introduced a hearing aid in 1924 that could easily have been mistaken for a cell phone in use.

Poorly-qualified historians and YouTube viewing morons have backed Mr Clarke’s theory, suggesting that time travelers could already be among us today.
