It just makes sense not to spend billions of dollars on things that don't really change an outcome. It's been said that 50% of dollars are spent on people in their last six months of life. That may be wrong, but it is a huge number. Is it worth it?? At some point we have to grapple with that question. Only demagogues call that "rationing". Demagogues that own stock in pharmaceutical companies. |

Are you advocating that the government should be able to decide if your life or anyone else's life is "worth it"? |

Are you advocating that the government should be able to decide if your life or anyone else's life is "worth it"? No actually OP, is pretty fucking clear sometimes. We SHOULD NOT prescribe a drug that costs $3000/month when it extends life by at most a few weeks. And it is a Doctor's duty to do ANYTHING for his/her patient, so we are actually the WORST people to make those types of decisions. We have an inherent conflict of interest. Just like insurance companies do, only to the other side, the side that DENIES treatment. And yes, I am ABSOLUTLEY advocating that it is SOMEONE's job to say enough is enough. It should fall to a reasonable loved one, but many cannot do so because of emotions. These decisions, like any important decision, should be addressed ahead of time, not in the heat of the moment. It's real easy to say, yeah do a $100K procedure. |

It's real easy to say, yeah do a $100K procedure. ....Whoa.....Wait just a damn minute. Let me confirm, you are saying that a person who has paid for health insurance, or is covered by their employer or federal program for which he or she has paid into all their life with their hard earned wages are not entitled to make health decisions for themselves with the blessing of their doctor? That someone, somewhere gets to make a life or death decision for them without knowing any facts surrounding circumstance other than a chart? Are you implying that YOU are paying for their medical treatment and somehow have authority to impose such demands on your fellow man? Seriously? You're not pulling my leg are you? For REAL? Are you aware that the $100,000 procedure you speak of is reimbursed to the doctors/hospitals who perform the procedure at pennies on the dollar? Why do you think that doctors and hospitals have to push up prices to ridiculous levels? Because the insurance companies AND THE GOVERNMENT are only willing to pay 5-10% of cost of a procedure to PAY the people that treat YOU. As reimbursements go down, prices go UP. Yep, that $100,000 bill actually becomes $10,000 or less when it gets to YOUR service provider. Seriously, have you even researched this? |
CRYSTAL in MATRIX User ID: 1064319 United States 11/01/2010 08:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have no problem with reform...we need it, this bill is not reform...it's a power grab. Limit the profits big pharma can make, all they do is change a few molecules, pay to run it through the red tape of the FDA, and ka-ching us to death, paying the docs along the way to shove it down our throats, and charging the insurance co insane amounts for what cost pennies to produce... "No guts, no glory!" |

Yep, that $100,000 bill actually becomes $10,000 or less when it gets to YOUR service provider. Seriously, have you even researched this? re-read what I wrote. You COMPLETELY mischaracterized it. Docs are OBLIGATED to go to ANY length to support their patient. Many times we know the treatment is futile, and merely adds expense, and pain. It is ironic that you post a ridiculous video denigrating "Obamacare", and yet spout off about patient's rights. "Obama care" is all about giving patients a set of rights. I understand this way better than you do, as I live it everyday as a doc. And stop hyperventilating... it's bad for your health. |
Silicon Jock (OP) User ID: 1149230 United States 11/01/2010 08:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sure, it is your obligation to treat a patient and sure some procedures may be futile. So why don't you tell the patient that what they want to do is futile? Oh, you did, so you think that someone in Washington should be able to deny them the treatment that their premiums/taxes say they are entitled to? Besides, the video is not just about rationing care. It is also about the government dictating what YOU as a physician (if you really are one) are ORDERED to do to treat a patient. That sits with you well? |

They are constrained by what the insurance companies will pay. But let's say I can personally use my OWN money to pay for my care, who is Obama to say I can't? Obamacare takes away MY freedom. Wake up. This is communism and the willful destruction of the BEST healthcare system on the planet. We've been duped. |

Second, the single MOST important thing a physician can do is help their patient realistically face their illness. We are not magicians; patients will die. But they should die in comfort, with their family around them, knowing they gave their best shot. A little gallows humor: "Just remember, no one gets out alive" |
