11/2 GHOST QUAKE: WAIT FOR IT... WAIT FOR IT...
On 11/2, amateur seismologists (and GLPers) noticed something which we could not explain. A thread on the subject was started here: [link to www.godlikeproductions.com] It appeared that there had been a rather large earthquake (probably Md 6.0-7.0) somewhere within about 150 miles of the Solomon Islands chain, yet this earthquake had not shown up on any earthquake reports. There were no Tsunami warnings. Indeed, the only evidence of it at all seemed to be that it showed up on almost every seismograph in the world. It looks like it was very very deep... deep enough that it would not be immediately felt at the epicenter (this has happened before) although some reported feeling it halfway around the world (although 'feeling it' is rather subjective, and so cannot be counted as evidence). Initially, it was thought that the quake had something to do with Yellowstone, which has subsequently been rather discounted as the Solomon Islands are just a teensy distance away from Montana.

link to an example of the seismic data: [link to aslwww.cr.usgs.gov]

Here's what I think may be happening:

I think that there has been an increase in pressure in one portion of the earth's crust, which is unable to release and so is translating its potential to other areas of the world. Take a look at the following link:

[link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

Notice all the earthquakes in the SoCal area... there are more than 700 on this map, and this is pretty much what you see whenever you look at the quake data, these days. Then look at the San Francisco area, and notice that you get nothing. Note that SoCal is active because it is sliding northwards against the North American Plate, yet the plate that it slides directly into (the Juan de Fuca plate, a plate which is being pushed under the NA plate by the pacific plate) is showing nearly no movement whatsoever. This sets up an imbalance. Add to this the fact that JdF has a trench (spread zone) and you get even more energy directed eastward.

So I think that the plates are getting ready to readjust, and I think that we should see more of these deep quakes. However (and this is just speculation) pressure translates to heat, and the earth doesn't radiate heat very well. That means increased volcanic activity in other parts of the world, until the Juan de Fuca plate (that's what SoCal is sliding into) actually cuts loose. And given that JdF Plate is being pushed northward as it is also being pushed eastward, that means a MAJOR release of energy somewhere within (in my crackpot opinion) 500 miles of Seattle.

No, I don't have dates. We'd see pre-release temblors before it happened, as things start to give way, though. Either a major eruption, or a big-ass quake (or a big ass-quake, if you prefer).

That's all I got.

Thanks for that :) I'm still digging for more information, so hopefully I'll be able to narrow down what I think is happening and show it in real time.

Actually, that's pretty damned good!

Now add to the mix the fact that this subduction zone has been essentially "locked" for some time now, and we're within the window of estimation for a megathrust event such as the one in 1700, and maybe this makes more sense. Possibly it's not a RESTRUCTURING of tectonic plate pressure. Theoretically it could be more in the nature of a cyclic migration, if you will, or rather a periodic redistribution of pressure, resulting in some predictable events.

The idea of a cycle is very prevalent in all that's going on today, so I think it works into your theory quite nicely. And again, good info, and good reasoning! Thank you!

Thank you again. The more I look at the maps and consider the vectors, the more I think that Ranier (or one of the cascade chain volcanoes) is due for a big boom. St. Helens is a possibility, but I can't see that being the end of it... only the start.

here's a close-up of Cali/Nevada with fault lines on it. At the top left you can see JdF plate beginning.

We have a number of amateur seismologists here in GLP, yes. I worded that badly. I should have said, "Some amateur seismologists here on GLP". Although, I must admit, I have no way of knowing if some of the commentors in the thread aren't actual seismologists. Or male strippers, for that matter. Internet anonymity is a wonderful thing.

I'm in touch with Prof. Amman, of the PSU Seismology department. He's taking a look at the data for me, so that we can have a somewhat qualified opinion of the matter.

Well, there's two possibilities here, one that I hadn't thought of.

The first is that it's something that didn't register as an earthquake anywhere, yet was felt all-over. That's a bit of a stretch, but not outside the bounds of possibility.

The second is that it's related to one of the 21 erupting volcanoes across the globe, which is more likely. However, if this is the case then it's a VERY deep VERY violent movement of magma, and should correspond to a VERY big eruption of some sort.

Re: 11/2 GHOST QUAKE: WAIT FOR IT... WAIT FOR IT...
I would also like to add that there has been an unusual number of 4.0+ quakes recently along the Aleutian Islands fault chain. Here's the GPS time series which shows the motion and speed of the plates, as we know it to date (information is dated, and not real-time):

[link to sideshow.jpl.nasa.gov]

The north-western portion of the NA plate pushes in a SW direction, while the south-western portion of the plate moves in a NW direction, or effectively the entire NA plate is rotating around the JdF plate, which is expanding even as it is subducting. The Pacific plate is spreading, effectively pushing itself east-ward and west-ward at the same time. The Atlantic and Pacific trenches are the major drivers of the volcanic activity along the Indonesian Volcano chain, much like squeezing the sides of a jigsaw-puzzle will cause some pieces to bend, others to be pushed down, and still others to be pushed up.

But I'm getting wordy now, and most everyone already knows what I'm talking about. I still hope to learn something from Prof. Amman, however.

I was watching the Daily Show last night, and they were making fun of news clips from the election night..

In one of the clips, some guy on Fox said:

"This is a lot like in 1811, 1812, when the new Madrid earth quake was so devastating that it made the new Mississippi river run backwards"

I thought that was very peculiar

My favorite part about the New Madrid quake is not the affect on the Mississippi river, but rather the sand volcanoes that burst out of the plains. I've seen demonstrations (on a small scale) of how they were formed, but to see one up-close would be exhilerating. Pressure is created by the shaking, and liquid forms muddy fountains that break the surface-tension of the soil. Only happens with moist ground, however.
