Quoting: libertineI am not sure what the poster was thinking however, coffee filters serve well at filtering water from dubious sources before progressing to the purification processes. Clean grit and whatever in your drinking water would not be fun to drink if you know what I mean. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1138940I was gonna ask if you had away to get water out of the well...hand pump or otherwise. Nice! You can pull the electric pump system out of the well then drop into the well-weighted plastic bottles on rope glue around the rope holes, then suspend them down into the well, and bring up water that way. Most wells are deep however, the water rises in the pipe so you typically will not require too much rope. It is so important for one to have ample rope on hand along with waterproof glue for any of the numerous events that might occur should you lose power. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1078799 11/05/2010 03:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | canned beans, canned meat, and canned veggies Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1138940several extra bags of dog food for the pup Tons of TP, papertowels, paper plates and bowls I'm hoping I feel pretty stupid come the 3rd week of November, and have to discover a wide variety of ways to dress up pinto beans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner...I like them anyway so no big deal really. Within reason those items are good to have no matter what, right? The TP, towles, plates, and bowls last a long time, just take up room. The big issue to make sure to buy items you want to eat before they expire, or get items at super cheap prices and figure it is comfort spending and you might be tossing them out. Worse case donate the canned food to a food bank just before they expire in the future. |

Good to know...there are two really good wells here and I was wondering what would be an effective way to get at the water without a hand pump in case of widespread power outages. Should probably get some sort of plastic hand crank pump and some flexible tubing at the hardware store. |

Should probably get some sort of plastic hand crank pump and some flexible tubing at the hardware store. You should first know at what level your water sits at for example our well goes down 180 feet however the water sits at 21 feet. A good hand pump goes for $1,000 for a shallow well however, dry years might take the water level lower and a deeper hand pump goes for a great deal more money. The old soda bottle, glue, rocks and rope method is a really cheap method to procure water from a well and can travel easily with you if necessary. |

| scorpio66 User ID: 2453057 07/25/2012 08:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | since the swine flu scare, i've made sure to keep some handy dandy cold meds on hand. who wants to go out for cough syrup when you might catch a death flu, right? i also try to keep at least 2 weeks worth of non-perishable foods on hand. this fluctuates from time to time. i learned to only keep stuff we actually eat so i rotate it. this summer's drought inspired me to start picking up a gallon or two of water (buck each at walmart) each time i hit up the grocery but i still think it's inadequate. better than the nothing we had, but still, when you think of all the things you need water for, i'm sure we'd be screwed in just a cpl days. i plan to grab another few but really, there's no where to put it anyway. i've stopped buying canned tuna, sad. i would like to have an extra couple bags of dog food. but otherwise, i really don't see the point in trying to hoard a year's supply of food here. it's just not practical. we'd never be able to protect it. |
| Anodyne339 User ID: 19934209 07/25/2012 09:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yup, because nothing ever goes wrong! There will never be a scenario in which you have no ability to buy the things you need when you need them. Like - ice storms or blizzards - hurricanes - unemployment - truckers' strikes - earthquakes - inflation - food contamination - sickness - factory strikes - transportation issues - local catastrophes - local riots I mean, nothing like that ever happens, right? We'll always have jobs and money, and nothing will ever disrupt our usual routine! And the bad stuff that routinely happens in other countries, well, bad stuff like that never happens here, it only happens to poor people in countries we've never heard of, right? Boy, that's a load off my mind! |
| Anodyne339 User ID: 19934209 07/25/2012 10:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | On a serious note... I grew up in hurricane country, and I grew up poor. I learned early on that I didn't like running out of things or not having what I needed when something unexpected happened. Along the way, I also came to enjoy learning how to do, make and fix things by myself instead of needing to buy replacements or depend on others to get what I need. It used to be that if you didn't plan ahead and prepare, you didn't survive the winter (or much of anything else). It wasn't all that long ago, either. When did it become the norm to only live for the moment and assume that nothing bad can happen? You don't have to buy into doomsday scenarios to see the common sense in prepping. |
