For Catholics: No such thing but it is a great way for the Roman cult to make money. Person dies and stupid folks donate money for "masses" to get the deceased out of Purgatory. When my dad died, my stupid mother took several hundred dollars to the priest to pay in advance for masses for my dad who wasn't Catholic. Not sure how much a mass costs, but I'm guessing $20 if not alot more. This is very, very common in my rural area. The priest says mass daily, sometimes twice on Sunday. Figuring at least 5 masses a week, the priest mentions the dead person's name and whoopee there's $$$$. Sounds like a huge racket. Light a candle in the back of the church and deposit more money please! The Catholic church in our town sends a packet of donation envelopes every few months and there are extra envelopes for the bldg fund, old folks, etc... Needless to say, the pack goes straight to the trash. Quoting: farm girl 1156834When will these mind-controlled people awaken. Biased, absolutely. The stipend use to be 5.00, I believe it is 10.00 now. No priest gets rich from offering a Mass for a person's soul. A priest can only offer the Mass a certain number of times in a day and many of the masses are offered for other intentions as example for the parish. |

Believe in Purgatory, offer prayers for the souls in Purgatory and they will you. We are a family. + + + Do you realize sincere Protestants believe in Purgatory but don't realize it. PURGATORY IN ALL BUT NAME By W. ROBERT ANFILL One of the most frustrating experiences a Catholic can have in explaining his faith to Evangelical and Fundamentalist Protestants is that they so often believe and accept the most mysterious and difficult Christian doctrines, such as the Trinity and the vicarious atonement, without a murmur and then balk at doctrines which even by their own standards should pose no difficulty at all. Purgatory is a prime example. Protestants deny the existence of purgatory because they say that the only cleansing needed for salvation is the cleansing in the precious Blood of Jesus, poured out on the Cross for sinners. Catholics agree. The holy souls in purgatory are not experiencing a different or additional cleansing, but only the final effects of the one cleansing in the blood of Christ, since nothing unclean shall enter heaven (Rev. 21:27). Those who are being purified beyond death are not the unbelieving and the impenitent, who will go to hell; the souls in purgatory are those who have already been justified by grace and are at peace with God at their life’s end. Protestants protest against purgatory, yet they have no objection to the idea that for their sins God sometimes allows Christians to endure both temporal judgments and deprivation of spiritual consolations. For example, the Presbyterian Westminster Confession (1646) says that true Christian believers may, through the temptation of Satan and of the world, the prevalence of corruption remaining in them, and the neglect of the means of their preservation, fall into grievous sins; and for a time continue therein: whereby they incur God’s displeasure, and grieve his holy Spirit; come to be deprived of some measure of their graces and comforts; have their hearts hardened, and their consciences wounded; hurt and scandalize others, and bring temporal judgments upon themselves (from John H. Leith, ed., Creeds of the Churches: A Reader in Christian Doctrine in the Bible to the Present (Richmond, Virginia: John Knox Press, 1973), p. 212). The Baptist Abstract of Principles (1859) says in a similar vein that believers may "fall, through neglect and temptation, into sin, whereby they grieve the Spirit, impair their graces and comforts, bring reproach on the Church, and temporal judgments on themselves . . . " (Leith, p. 342). If a justified believer can suffer these consequences of sin, then why can’t the same believer experience analogous temporal judgments beyond death, if there remain in him "wood, hay, and straw" (1 Cor. 3:121) still to be consumed? In fact, Protestants should have fewer objections to purgatory than to other Catholic doctrines: In purgatory, there is no increase of "merit" even as the fruition of Christ’s grace in us—no good works of any kind. That is why Catholic theologians have coined the term "satispassion" to describe what happens there. The holy souls, in their present state, are assured of their salvation in Christ and eternally secure in this knowledge. Though they suffer, they are sustained by the love of God and helped by the prayers of the faithful. And if there is a purgatory, then there can be no more objection to these prayers than to any other intercessory prayer Christians might offer in the name of Jesus.... rest of the writing to be found at: [link to www.catholic.com] |

It is a yet another man made, controlling, subjugating, degrading, money making scheme dreamed up by those that saw people would pay for priests to pray for the repose of the soul. Here is the profession of faith that is said at every Mass by Catholics. If it was such an important concept surely it would have been included in the profession of faith wouldn't it? After all the time and money spent by the Roman Emperor Constantine for the new gov't sponsored religion at the Council of Nicea you would think that Purgatory would be addressed. Profession of Faith / Nicene Creed / Apostle's Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom. -- Samuel Taylor Coleridge In seeking wisdom thou art wise; in imagining that thou hast attained it - thou art a fool. -- Lord Chesterfield |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1156391 United States 11/12/2010 04:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Tuesday, November 2, 2010: (All Souls’ Day) Jesus said: “My people, you know of My mercy in saving souls from hell, but you also know of My justice where only pure souls can enter into heaven. As your priests mentioned, there is My forgiveness of repentant sinners, but there also is reparation for those sins that needs to be satisfied in some way as well. Some do their reparation or suffering on earth to save them time in purgatory. Others need to be purified in purgatory. Even in purgatory there are two general sufferings. The lower parts of purgatory suffer from the burning flames as in hell, and they cannot be in My presence, but they are promised one day to enter heaven. These souls are spirits only, and they can sometimes communicate with the people on earth. The upper parts of purgatory are not suffering the flames, but they are in a grey, dingy area, and they also cannot be in My presence. These souls see each other, but they cannot comfort each other. Time in purgatory is no longer relevant because these souls are outside of time, and their suffering seems longer. Once you have a sense of how much these souls suffer, then you want to help alleviate their time there. My faithful can pray for these souls to lessen their time, and Masses said for them are an even greater help. Some souls have to suffer a minimum time in purgatory before your prayers can benefit them. So in your daily prayers, do not forget to pray for the release of souls in purgatory, especially those in your own family who may still be suffering there.” www.johnleary.com |

Smilin, hi, There are spiritual things explained, written in Scripture but not given a name. You believe in the Incarnation, the Trinity...I hope. These are examples of subjects spoken of in Scripture and later given a name. The same with Purgatory. Go back and read the Scriptural references to Purgatory in an earlier post. Jesus Himself speaks of Purgatory and St. Paul. Remember Our Lord's words, one scripture reverence..."until the last farthing (penny)." This is a reference to Purgatory. + + + A State After Death of Suffering and Forgiveness Matt. 5:26,18:34; Luke 12:58-59 – Jesus teaches us, “Come to terms with your opponent or you will be handed over to the judge and thrown into prison. You will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” The word “opponent” (antidiko) is likely a reference to the devil (see the same word for devil in 1 Pet. 5:8) who is an accuser against man (c.f. Job 1.6-12; Zech. 3.1; Rev. 12.10), and God is the judge. If we have not adequately dealt with satan and sin in this life, we will be held in a temporary state called a prison, and we won’t get out until we have satisfied our entire debt to God. This “prison” is purgatory where we will not get out until the last penny is paid. Matthew 5:26 Amen I say to thee, thou shalt not go out from thence till thou repay the last farthing. |

Purgatory...by the Church. +++ +++ Challenges from a Protestant on purgatory Kevin: I have reviewed your page on purgatory and find it to be full of false teaching. For example, you say on your website: “Matt. 12:32 - Jesus clearly provides that there is forgiveness after death. Forgiveness is not necessary in heaven, and there is no forgiveness in hell. This proves that there is another state after death, and the Church for nearly 2,000 years has called this state purgatory.” However, Matthew 12:32 Makes no reference to forgiveness after death. It simply states that "anyone who speaks against the Son of Man will be forgiven..." J. Salza: Kevin, you are incorrect. Just read the words: "[He] will not be forgiven either in this age or in the age to come." Matt. 12:32. The phrase “in the age” (in Greek, en to mellonti) refers to the afterlife (see, for example, Mk 10:30; Lk 18:30; 20:34-35; Eph. 2:1). Jesus is saying that one can be forgiven either in this age (earthly life) or in the age to come (after death). Those who are in heaven (which is in the age to come) have no need for forgiveness (true), and those who are in hell (which is in the age to come) cannot be forgiven (true). Therefore, there must be another state in the age to come where we can be forgiven (true). This is purgatory.
