Not in my area, not 4 months ago a man fired on 4 teenage jackasses breaking into his house.
Killed 2, and the others got away (caught later).

He wasn't in trouble until the captured teens told the cops that they were breaking into the home for the drug stash (which was found, causing the said man to be arrested for drug possetion).

So yeah, I would put 2 into the "child's" chest, and one in his or her head. Then have the cops do their job and clean up the body. (Okay, CSI, but you get the picture)

No prison time where I live, not even jail time. (Plus, the laws allow me to protect myself in my own home, regardless of the person's race or age)

If somebody is IN my house, as a thief, they are potentially murderers as well, and I will shoot to kill and ask questions later, when the cops are there, and the lights are on, and they aren't moving anymore.
