Re: High School ~ 1957 vs. 2010
It's sad but very true.

I graduated from high school in 2003 and felt like I was in a prison the whole time I was there. They locked down the entire school for two hours one day because it was "suspected" that some kid had some pot out in his car. The drug dogs were called out, they searched the car and it turned out it was a false alarm.

Any time a couple of kids got into a fight, police were called and I remember one boy being pressed with assault charges. No off school lunches, we had to wear ID badges, and we had to tuck in our shirts every day because the teachers watched a demonstration video of a kid hiding a bunch of firearms in his pants. I'm not kidding.

I finished HS in 1987. The shit I did would have me labeled now as a Terrorist.... I would have been arrested multiple times, they probably would have made me vanish... I would have been anal probed checking all possible locations for drugs.... holy shit it would have been total doom for me.

Funny thing... I smoked weed each day before going to school... sometime left school and went next door to the dog track... I sometimes left and went to the beach for the day.

I ended up finishing my D.Sc (Doctorate) degree in CS and have had a successful life.

I guess the things I did were not "earth ending" after all.

I can not imagine the hell kids have to go through now.

Tell you what... My father would light my ass up with the belt if I fucked up. There was no "time out" and harsh language...

The only "time out" I got was the time I was blacked out from getting my ass wooped for fucking up.

About the time I was 16 I could take my father and that shit ended but it gave me an understanding of reality that has kept me as a good person in most of my life.

When I was a kid you always acted decent because any parent had the right to slap you around if you acted like a jackass.

Even older kids had the right too...

We stayed in line.

To add to that, I remember a time when a boy brought in some Benadryl and forgot to bring a note and check it in with the nurse. A teacher found it, I don't remember if he took some during lunch or if it was found in his backpack but he was suspended for several days for "illegal substances." Yes, an over the counter antihistamine.

And then there was the "don't hit back," "back away if someone starts a fight with you" thing that the principal and teachers pounded into our heads.

Agree. I graduated in 1988 and most of those 1957 scenarios would have applied then. The world has changed a lot in 20 year let alone 50.

i can't even discipline my kids because the schools tell them to call the police on their own parents.

not that i would beat them but there is a certain limit IMHO that corporal punishment can be effective.

my 14 year old was even given a card with a phone number to CPS on it for god sake

one time, some ninny neighbor called CPS on us because, and i quote "they let their kids play in the front yard unsupervised" (when they were like 8-10 years old)

so that started an "investigation" culumnating with CPS taking my kids out of class with out my knowledge and interrogating them all about "do you do drugs does your parents do drugs does your parents hit you do they 'touch' you bla bla" and then an interview of each of us

i was so pissed off

they closed the file when the realized there was no basis for it but still...

the main thing i was mad about was they think they can go to my kids schools, haul them out of class and fill their heads with garbage with out even asking or telling us about it.
