GIG HARBOR, Wash. – The bear the mauled a woman near Gig Harbor remains at large.
traps remain set Monday and agents plan to kill the bear because it harmed a person.

The woman was walking in a wooded area with her unleashed dog when bear appeared. The dog chased after the bear when they encountered it. The woman then went to retrieve the dog and got between the dog and the bear. The bear attacked.

Just my opinion, but she was nuts for doing that. Besides, Gig Harbor has a leash law.

Yup, sounds like a bad cased of too-much granola and too many disney flicks.

The dog was doing it's thing, trying to protect her from what it felt was a threat and rather than taking advantage of it's heroism and escaping she manages to botch it up and get mauled.

The mind boggles....

Not normal for a bear to attack a person.

True for black bears. My wife and I were on a prolonged camping trip in central Idaho this summer. The local forest ranger warned us about a black bear that had attecked a campground host. He was just sctatched up a bit. I will be damned if a bear didn't come into our camp, and I could not chase it away. I am pretty sure if I had gotten aggresive with it, would have stood its ground, and attacked. It finally lost interest and lumbered away after 45 minutes.

It makes a person a bit uneasy.

I wonder if one of those boat air horns would work....I sure as hell know ammonia would....that bear would tie itself into a knot!
