Nicolo Rizzuto, the father of purported Montreal mobster Vito Rizzuto, has been shot and killed in his own home, according to reports.

Earlier this year, Rizzuto attended the funeral service for his 42-year-old grandson, Nick, who was named after his grandfather.

Nick Rizzuto was gunned down three days after Christmas, while he stood beside his Mercedes on a Montreal street.

Nicolo Rizzuto's son -- and Nick Rizzuto's father -- Vito, is currently serving time in the U.S. for racketeering.

MONTREAL — When members of the Rizzuto clan moved into their newly constructed luxury homes on Antoine Berthelet Ave. in the 1980s, they probably coveted the privacy the wooded area behind them provided.

But that same wooded area, which has remained untouched for decades despite rapid residential development in the neighbourhood, also provided cover for anyone looking to settle a score with the Rizzutos.

Police say that appears to be what happened Wednesday just before dinner when Nicolo (Zio Cola) Rizzuto, 86, was fatally shot inside his home. Police say they think at least one shooter was waiting in the woods around 5:40 p.m. and shot Rizzuto while he was at a window facing the thick trees beyond his backyard

Rizzuto had been released from the federal prison in Colorado around 9:30 a.m. ET and taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, who deported him back to Canada.
