Taupo supervolcano rumbling
The Oruanui eruption of the Taupo volcano was the world's largest known eruption in the past 70,000 years, with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8.

The Hatepe eruption represents the latest eruption from the Taupo Volcano, and occurred about 1,800 years ago. It was the most violent eruption in the world in the last 5,000 years.

Re: Taupo supervolcano rumbling
Taupo is a ‘supervolcano’ and one of the most frequently active and productive rhyolite caldera in the world. The huge caldera (collapse crater) has been partly filled by New Zealand’s largest lake, Lake Taupo. The caldera is created by subsidence of the ground surface due to emptying of the magma chamber in huge eruptions. The present magma chamber is between 6 and 8 km below the lake.

Although Taupo Volcano has much more violent eruptions than cone volcanoes, they are fortunately less frequent. It began erupting about 300,000 years ago and the present day caldera was created by an eruption 27,000 years ago called the Oruanui Eruption. Between this and the ‘Taupo Eruption’ (1800 years ago) there were at least 26 much smaller eruptions which formed lava domes and spread pumice and ash over nearby areas.

The Taupo Eruption was the most violent eruption known in the world in the last 5000 years. The eruption plume reached 50km into the air, well into the stratosphere. All of New Zealand received at least 1cm of ash, with areas near the lake being buried in more than 100 metres of pyroclastic flow. This scorching hot flow spread up to 90 km from the vent and covered all local features except Ruapehu. it is possible that ash from this eruption was the cause of red sunsets recorded by the Romans and Chinese at that time.

Yeah...that would be a real bummer for Al Gore and the other Globetard Earth Warmers.

No doubt the would switch to some Global cooling scam then instead.

Re: Taupo supervolcano rumbling
Thanks op, ive a interest in the happenings with lake taupo, when that last eruption happened, sent bolders all the way up here to Auckland, as well as covering with thick layer or soil, dirt ect, old monuments have been found meters below the surface around the bombay hills, thats only couple on minutes away from me.

With the activity still continueing down in christchurch, there is good reason to be wary.

Re: Taupo supervolcano rumbling
I would be worried about this one - the thing has been wanting to release since 2003. Last time it 'rumbled' there was steam coming up through the Maraes (not sure if that's the right spelling) and a river shifted 60 meters. And guess what? That was only last year.

yeah, the swarm is occuring very near the 'craters of the moon' geothermal park, a vent from the Taupo magma chamber rises there creating one of the most active geothermal areas in NZ.
[link to www.cratersofthemoon.co.nz]

more on Taupo:

The Taupo Volcanic Zone is one of the earth's most active geothermal regions. It has been the scene of some of the greatest eruptions ever known. From Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand’s central North Island out into the Pacific Ocean, the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) stretches some 250km along the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates. It marks the southwestern extremity of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and is very active on a global scale. At its most northerly point is White Island, currently New Zealand’s most active volcano. The TVZ contains a vast geothermal system and several distinct volcanic centres, including the great caldera of Lake Taupo.

I heard divers went to the bottom of that lake and found it pumping out boiling water and it's activity really cranking up.

Not sure how reliable that info is however?

That whole area is geologically active as I am sure you know. I wouldn't worry till the get more frequent/closer together and much stronger.

When the ice underneath starts to melt and the lake levels rise .... worry then.
