"the colors are diffraction from turbulent atmosphere at altitude. When it's down low, its more pronounced since the light has to go through more air than later in the evening when it's higher up."

^^^^THIS!!! it's the colors of the rainbow "emanating" one at a time from a star visually to our eyes looking through the atmosphere towards the horizon.
