Ive been thinking about water storage, and have gone through a lot of threads but haven't found anything on the big 5 gallon dispenser refill jugs. Does anyone have any info?

My family have used them for years. Well two of them we haven't needed anymore. They work great for me, I use them now for storage.
Let it be known, that the so called elitist’s liberties are not the grants of princes or parliaments. That many of our rights are inherent and essential. Agreed on as maxims and established as preliminaries even before government existed. We have a right to them, derived from our maker. Our forefathers have earned liberty at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasures, and their blood. Liberty is not built on the doctrine that a few NOBLES have the right to inherit the earth. It stands on this principal that the meanest and the lowest of people are by the unalterable, indefeasible laws of god and nature as well entitled to the benefit of the air to breath, light to see, food to eat, or clothes to wear as the nobles, or even a king. That is liberty, and liberty will reign in America!

What type of cap do you use after you refill? Do you put drops of bleach in the water?

I heard that the blue ones leach Bisphenol A into the water.

The blue square "cubes" you get at Wal Mart are BP free. The clear-blue five gallon jugs that you see at the water store (the refillable types) are polycarbonate and do not contain BP. I guess if TSHTF, I'm more worried about dying of thirst than estrogen based carcinomas . . . but then, that's just me. cool2

Old water is better than no water.

I rotate 3-15 gallon jugs every 6 months, or when overly paranoid. LoL.

It is a short term supply that I can clean with silver or bleach so I don't worry too much---Any perceived SHTF and initiate 'Plan B'.

Filtration of a spring is my longer-term solution.

bottlers give bottled water a shelf life of 2 years. I have drank 3 year old water no problems. Like another poster said any water is better than none and to rotate stored water, to maintain optimum freshness. BTW the old water I drank had a white flaky sediment likely minerals.

+1

The Blue Cubes in the sporting goods section of Walmart have lasted my tribe though 8 years of continuous use with the only failures being the spigots getting broken during transport.Remove the spigots or scrw them in on the inside for storage and they should last for at least a decade or even decades possibly and not leech any nasty chemicals.

Also, make sure you use unscented bleach or your water will be undrinkable

A little bleach is not a problem. Like others said above it's best to have some water than none. You can always boil it in a smaller container which would be no problem to find.

Re: How long do the clear-blue 5 gallon Culligan water jugs last in storage?
You'd be better off finding a store that sells beer and wine making supplies. They will have those bottles in GLASS.

They will sell corks that will fit the tops.

Keep the water for six months and then refill, after washing out with a few drops of bleach and rinsing 3/4 times.

If you can't get corks, you can use wax paper and rubberbands, or twist ties.

Re: How long do the clear-blue 5 gallon Culligan water jugs last in storage?
We got rid of all the blue bottles we had as they were marked with a 7 in the triangle on the bottom, a few were 6.
those are bad.
They last for years but are crap.
We bought a bunch of #2 5 gallon white buckets with lids which are much more stable and they are far sturdier and they stack nicely when full.

Blue bottles....avoid them.
