1969 was the END of the Vietnam War, NOT the beginning or even the middle. No dice on your War connection there.

What DID HAPPEN in 1969, that most didn't know about at the time and fewer still know today, is how close to a nuclear exchange we came with the USSR in 1969.

China was developing it's nuclear weapons and the USSR informally proposed to Nixon that IT (the USSR) cut off the head of the dragon via a surgical nuclear strike. Nixon's response was (hope I can quote this somewhat accurately) "We would consider a nuclear strike against China as a direct attack on the United States" ... or something very close to that. The USSR elected to NOT TEST the US resolve on that issue and NOT attack China's nuclear program (and possibly it's central government also).

As a result of Nixon's protection of China via the US nuclear umbrella there was no USSR attack on China's nuclear program ... AND ... within a year or so the US and China began the negotiations that led to Mao inviting Nixon to China. (visit was early 1972)

Hugh Sidney of Time Magazine wrote a couple of short columns on the nuclear showdown between the USSR and the US over China's nuclear program and what transpired (obviously being fed the info for the articles by the Nixon Whitehouse), but I can't recall reading about it in any other periodicals of the day ... or subsequent.

I have noticed in several of his speeches that he starts out talking in a normal fashion.......and then a few minutes afterword......there is a transformation.....which is very hypnotic. Something else has taken over.

Scroll to 41:45 mark on the film "Triumph of the Will" and listen to his speech to the Hitler Youth at the Nurenburg Conference of 1934. Be sure to read the subtitles and absorb his message as it would have been heard by the ears, and seen by the eyes, of a German teenager and pre-teen, in 1934.

If you do that you will begin to see the magical hold Hitler had on young Germans of that era (separate from their parents) and why he had that hold. It is one of the most amazing political speeches I have ever heard in my lifetime of hearing political speeches (I grew up in a family of politicians so I have heard literally thousands in my lifetime).
