Andy Irons Funeral - One Of The Most Amazing Events In Kauai History

Wow..!! His brother gave my son a hat over this last summer. What a turnout. Says alot. Thanks for posting this video.

Hawaiian funerals are a beautiful experience in themselves but this one was something special. I don't thing I've ever seen underwater footage of one before.

Born and raised in Hawaii, I was really sad to hear About AI

I wasn't aware of this noble Hawaiian tradition until watching a HAWAII 5-0 episode a few weeks ago that involved the death of a noted surfer. The funeral recreated for the show involved a much smaller ring of about 30 people...
but it was one of the most moving things I've ever seen and presented a lasting tribute for the deceased of the storyline. WAAAY COOL way to remember a loved one!

I'm sure Andy was a great guy and great surfer. Why is this funeral so special? People die everyday.

I personally would love to have a cremation ceremony not unlike the Native Americans or even the Vickings!

Andy was the world surfing champion several years.

Andy was well loved and respected.

The surfing world is a tight community/family as is the north shore of Kauai where Andy and his family are from.

Something that most on the mainland (in large urban and suburban sprawls) can no longer comprehend.

Malu is right - we live in another world over here - what happens to one of us, affects us all.

When we lose grasp of who we are, where we came from, the "divide and conquer" game is much easier to be played

It is cool to witness a group of people who are still connected to the earth, that is WHO we are.

OP: Thanks for posting IZ doing "Over The Rainbow" - I've had it saved on my hardrive ever since I first saw it a couple of years ago... but without with his ceremonial footage. It made me cry all over again, but they were bittersweet tears at the simple beauty of this man's humble voice.
