Scientists at British biotechnology giant Oxitec recently developed a genetically-modified (GM) mosquito that, apart from a specific chemical antibiotic, is unable to successfully repopulate. And the company recently released millions of these GM mosquitoes in the Cayman Islands to see what would happen.

Mutant mosquitoes on 7-Mile Beach... Great!

Before jumping on the knee jerk bandwagon and the sensationalist title, perhaps you should read why exactley the mosquitoes were release.

They a genetically modified males, who fail create eggs that are viable, these males compete with regular mosquitoes for females, and therefore significantly reduce the population or so it is hypothesized. The reason for releasing them is to see if their impact is significant.

Unilke holywod would have you believe these Mutated Mosquitoes are not 3 feet monsters with lazer beams, and becuase their eggs are not viable, they lack the ability to pass on their genetically modified genes.

Yeah but if they out compete and cause an overall reduction in the mosquito population...although i recognize they are pests to humans, how do they know how it will impact the ecosystem as a whole. Unintended consequences and all that...

Seems that these mosquitoes might find a source of tetracycline in human hosts, and if this is possible, it would most likely happen in first world countries, where this antibiotic is widely prescribed. Hmm...

On second thought, it's the larvae (not the eggs) that supposedly require Tetracycline in order to live to adulthood. But again, water supplies in first world countries are more likely to be tainted with this chemical, no?

who is to say if they will not evolve the ability to reproduce, or worse yet pass on thier bio traits to the creatures they feed on? remember " life will find a way".....

Please stop hiding behind a book and ask yourself what can you do about changing things.

Genetically modifying mosquitoes and releasing them into the wild where they are free to interbreed with "wild-type" mosquitoes can cause large numbers of mosquitoes to be "born' that:

(a) can evade natural predators (due to natural predators no longer being able to properly recognize them as prey)

(b) poison natural predators (when these mosquitoes are eaten by natural predators they poison the predators due to a poisonous substance they have been genetically engineered to produce)

(c) make competitor species sterile (when they interbreed with them)

(d) provide a more hospitable vessel for deadly human parasites such as the malaria parasite, i.e. Plasmodium vivax) or the virus that causes Dengue fever

(e) impart immunity in wild-type mosquitoes they interbreed with toward pesticides that are presently being used to destroy mosquito larvae

(f) extend the range of wild-type mosquitoes that they breed with and that harbor danerous human parasites such as the malaria parasite; extending the range means increasing the region in which the mosquitoes can be a threat to humans as a parasitic vector.

All of the above could have explosive ramifications such as a swift increase in the number of cases that are seen croppin up in the U.S. of diseases that traditionally and, almost exclusively, stay within the confines of the Caribbean and/or southern Mexico and points south.

They may not have to release "GM" bees, they have already all but obliterated regular honeybees and many of the surviving honeybee populations have become Africanized, both of which make gettin crops pollinized more difficult.

As it is now, farmers already have to hire beekeepers that travel around with hundreds of hives in boxes in the backs of trucks. The beekeepers go from farm to farm on a circuit to help the the farmers get their crops pollinated.
