"The male GM mosquitoes mate with normal females to produce larvae that die unless the antibiotic tetracycline is present. In tetracycline's absence an enzyme accumulates to a toxic level, killing the larvae."
Seems that these mosquitoes might find a source of tetracycline in human hosts, and if this is possible, it would most likely happen in first world countries, where this antibiotic is widely prescribed. Hmm... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1125245On second thought, it's the larvae (not the eggs) that supposedly require Tetracycline in order to live to adulthood. But again, water supplies in first world countries are more likely to be tainted with this chemical, no?
