Speaking of heat...I think there is a conspiracy here in regards to heat. We must have another source of heat other than wood/fireplace in order to get house insurance. And most houses dont even have a fireplace built into them. Yet it is cold 5 months out of the year

It very well could be that insurance companies bitched about people only using a firepace and their water lines freezing and bursting causing damage. If it's an issue with you, pony up the money for a home sized propane tank and some space heaters. If you never use it then you only pay the inital cost - plus it's there in an emergency.

I agree with your reasoning in regards to insurance. Either way, I think that having a fireplace built into homes should have been a requirement. The thought of no power in the dead of winter without one is somewhat horrifying to me...and makes little sense. Old homes have fireplaces...with good reason...
