I just inherited my grandfathers Masonic Library!
A total of over 200 books. Many published between 1680-1910. 90% of these books all have a marble inlay on the inside of both the front and back covers. My Grandfather was a 33 degree Mason and also a Judge for the West Vancouver court system. I've spent the last few going through some of the older books and I think i've got some 'gold'! Lots on the history and establishment of the Masons.

Me gramps and brother are masons. Kind of thought the Lodge would ask for the books back after a member passes.

Grandad is way up there in the lodge. 60 years of service. We know barely anything about it.

Re: I just inherited my grandfathers Masonic Library!
well i've looked up the value of some of them on abesbooks which shows the average value and rarity. Several of the books have a quote from Isaac Watts referring to the importance of returning the books to the Lodge. There is a series of twelve books on the history of Rome that were actually printed in 1721 and hand signed by the author J.Swan. Quite interesting. I'd hardly consider throwing them on the bonfire or selling them...

Also along with the books i received 3 14k gold rings. Each containing a different color stone. Also there are two Shriners pins that have several diamonds encrusted. I assume they were gifts for service.

I'd love to share what these books have to offer with GLP. I've been a fan of sacredtexts for quite some time so perhaps i'll email them and see what they can do. One of the books that really stood out to me is one called 'Egypt, The Cradle of Ancient Masonry. Also there are a series of Mackey's Revised Encyclopedias of Freemasonry which have ton's of amazing facts about rituals and history of the order. I'll get pics up asap

Re: I just inherited my grandfathers Masonic Library!
I would be careful who you contact about the books. The less people that know who you are and that you have them the better.

I would discourage scanning them in the traditional fashion (i.e. flatbed scanner).

If they were my books I would set up a good quality digital camera on a tripod with some good fixed lighting.....open the book page by page and take a photo of the cover and each page. I'd then convert all the page images into a PDF. I'd love to help on a project like this.

I know....I know....this will take a long time. But considering what you have I would do it. I'd guess that you could do 1 book a day (depending on how much time you have)

Good Luck.

Yes, best to make copies using a digital camera first, then make inquiries.
Maybe make a backup or 2 and put them elsewhere.
But perhaps all the sensitive volumes are already removed.

Hey, Sorry guys had to catch some sleep! I'll work on taking photographs of all the books that seem of most intrigue after work today and start cataloging them. It will be quite extensive a task but will start plugging away. I've email the people at sacredtexts in hope that they can help me get these books online. I do have a day job as a carpenter so i'll have to do this in the evenings. i'll keep you posted

Funny how everyone tries to beat on Manly p. Hall. If you read what he writes or Aurthur E Waite as well.

Although the rituals are described, portions(dangerous ones are left out) They ALWAYS explain the folly of dabbling.

They are included as historical example. Both are incredibly insightful and enlightening sources of info.
Cui Bono?
