'Bad Guys' often have a different sense of justice ("If they kill one of us, we'll kill one of them to make it even, regardless of whether our guy deserved it or not"), and they often don't think they were in the wrong in the first place ("That rich store owner got rich by cheating and stealing from people like us," etc).

This is not a good reason to remain inactive in defending your own. This type of reasoning is debilitating. If more people did what this man did, I really believe that criminals would think twice about threatening whoever they pleased.
