Just got in trouble w/ step dad and some very nosey cops...opinions welcomed

Fucking psychopath fest in here, the Cops should not have been in someones garage.
Wtf if the door was broken?Have a think.
They didn't see anyone breaking in or hotwiring a car.
If the Cops did that to me for any reason I would want them charged with trespassing.

Apparently you don't know shit about the law. If you leave you're doors, be it house or garage open, the police have every legal right to enter. If you tried to have them charged for trespassing you'd be laughed out of court. the door was open, the police only have to say they had a mild suspicion there was a crime happening to check it out.

Seems suspicious enough for me to expect the police to have a closer look. Meaning it sucks that you got sprung because of it, but great if someone had broken in and the cops saved the day. Can't really fault them on that.

Not much else to say, you know you were wrong for taking the car. The police part is unfortunate, but next time you'll be more careful to keep things looking 'normal and orderly' so as not to attract unwelcome house guests.

A little more info, I was gonna be gone one hour max, the keys were left in ignition by his son who happens to be in town. If I thought for one second that my mom was in danger I would have shut the garage door and risked them hearing it but come on. Seriously?

Not in Australia. If he was caught, he would be charged with "Unlawful use of a motor vehicle", not stealing it. Because, he didn't steal it, he only used it unlawfully. He always intended to bring it back.

I don't have insurance or a car so I borrow my mothers car at night when she's sleeping. She has told me not to do that and I know that I am wrong for doing it. Here is the part I would like to hear some opinions about .The garge door is loud so I keep it open so I don't make any extra noise. So I'm at a friends house and I get a text asking if I know why the cops were just at my house. I say no and ask what did they say. So my step dad who happens to be a lawyer & already knew I did nothing wrong finally tells me they were notifying him that his garage door was open, at 2 am ! Im like what the fuck! We have a two car garage so here is what the cops did. Pulled into our driveway, walked into the garage, walked up to the second car where door was closed and saw a set of keys in the ignition so he decided to ring door bell and let my parents know. They freaked. They said I put their safety in jepardy and I told them the cops should have never rang our door bell at 2 am and they definitely should not have come into our garage like that. My stepdad, the lawyer , asked me if i was high on drugs , fir saying the cops were in the wrong. If anything would have happened it would have been 100% my fault. So should the cops have done all that?

It depends, If they were told to keep an eye on the area or if there has been break ins it could be a good thing for the cops to be proactive. As for your responsability, If my son did that he would be in deep sh!t, QUIT being sneaky, get insurance if you want to drive and respect your parents. My son is 19, He was a state class wrestler, Black Belt, graduated top 10 in High school, he is in his 2nd year of college and works, His boss that owns many business' is groming him to run some of them, He rode a motorcycle in high school BECAUSE they is all he could afford. You sound spoiled, see the light before it's to late.
