The last 497 press conferences in the last month have all been billed as "now announcing aliens!!!11!!1!"

Guess what? Total failure.

This press conference will be nothing. It will be about as startling as NASA claiming they now have proof that it is dark at night.

No aliens.
No Planet XXX.
No First Contact with Aliens from a black hole.
No spaceships.

Grow the fuck up.

If that is what you were expecting then maybe it is you that should grow the fuck up

Very cool - arsenic instead of phosphate in energy carriers. Arsenic kills us because it screws up our energy transport system, but very simple critters are a lot more bullet-proof.

also here is an older article.. interesting to read knowing what we know now..

[link to news.bbc.co.uk]

Alien life 'may exist among us'

"We could have a 'mission to Earth'. There's a big long list of places we could be looking," observed Professor Davies.

"For example, if we are looking for arsenic life, we could head for environments which are both arsenic rich and phosphorus poor - such as deep ocean vents.

"There is also a heavily contaminated lake in California which is arsenic rich - Mono Lake - and we do find microbes in there which get their energy from arsenic.

"But they don't actually incorporate the arsenic into themselves. They spit it back out again. They smoke but they don't inhale."

Now they can. WTF?

Humans have created life in a lab. ...

Woah!!, when??

I'd Like to read more, do you have a link?

The first life form created entirely with man-made DNA opens the door to manufacturing new drugs and fuels, while raising the possibility that mail-order germs may one-day be available for bioterrorists.

Researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, Maryland, reported today in the journal Science that for the first time, they made a copy of a bacterium’s entire genome and then transplanted it into a related organism, where it functioned normally.

The culmination of 15 years of effort, the work provides a blueprint for making organisms that could be used to make better fuels, drugs, vaccines and sources of food, the institute’s researchers said in a statement. It also suggests that companies that can manufacture DNA should stay on guard, said James Collins, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute-supported bioengineer at Boston University, in a telephone interview.

“They sent out chunks of the genetic code to companies and asked them each to synthesize parts of it,” Collins said. “You don’t want bad guys to order 10 parts of a nasty virus from 10 different groups and then put them together.”

Even so, lawmakers and the public can’t afford to turn away from this rapidly evolving technology, which holds both peril and promise, said Arthur Caplan, a University of Pennsylvania bioethicist, in a commentary written for msnbc.com today.

“The regulatory, social and legal challenges can be solved,” he said in the commentary. “It will take both national and international commitments to do so, but the risk of inaction is greater than the risks of moving forward given the tremendous benefits this technology promises.”

Ya, I thought you would link to that article on copying and altering existing life. It's in the gray area of creating life from life that already exists (copies of bacteria).

So many couples could say they created life every time they procreate, in that case man has created life for millions of years.

It would be interesting to hear about man actually "creating" life, not just copy and alter existing life.

Take some raw elements ... carbon, hydrogen, oxygen ... and create a living organism.

Hopefully they will be able to do just that soon.

But at least this is a step in the right direction.

First to say, very interesting announcement => thread
its like some of you people only read every other post and skip the ones that refute your claims. like i said, big difference between eating arsenic(which that 2 year old article was about) and having a completely different organic makeup then the rest of life on earth. Even the bacteria that eat sulpher on deep sea vents have the common organic structure.
This announcement isn't about bacteria that can eat arsenic, this is an announcement of a previously discovered bacteria that dosnt follow our conventional organic makeup
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1176946

I can say I agree with you and partly with your type of thinking. I think we are too much focused on searching for life "as we know it" which we not completely understand, and yet on our planet there can be life "as we not know it". So, what`s wrong with the picture? Do they, NASA etc., know more than they are letting out, or are we generally missing a genuine understanding of "life" and processes associated with life forming. Either way there is a long way ahead of us.
