My mother was talking to a neighbor who went to see if
why she gets some food stamps but her son doesn't, he lives
with her and is 20 and goes to college( scholarship ) but is
not eligible.

Supposedly now if you're a son or relative of a person in
food stamp program then other things apply,
unless you have a job( part time/full, it must be 20 hours
atleast) you do not get food stamps support.

Does that make any sense?, why would you need food stamps
support if you got a job?, isn't food stamps for people who
do not have a job and need food to live?.

Maybe they want to make sure your not sitting at home collecting all sorts of checks from different agencies : unemployeement, disability, SS, welfare, etc.

Someone working 20 hours a week at minimum cannot support a family very well. So they need help

The mom is on SSI and she gets some food stamp support but

she wanted to know why her son who is in school doesn't

get any, that's when they told her he needed to have a job

and go to school at the same time to receive support.

She didn't understand why he needed a job, if he had a job

he wouldn't be asking for food stamps, I think food stamps

should be given to anybody who doesn't have a job NOT to

those that have a job, they got money to buy food unlike

a jobless person.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1174747

They made that into law, when they did the welfare reform act back in the nineties. Before then and depend which state you live in. You weren't require to have a job. But some states you had to work for you food stamps, especially if you are a male. Except if you were receiving a income. The amount of food stamps receive, depends of your income and your rent. Which they still going by.

So why won't his mom pay for his food since he still lives at home?

They give food stamps to homeless people all day long; at least they do in Maine

Does he have a white sounding name?

100 percent American Citizen

I asked this because I actually know co-workers who both applied for food stamps, both have 2 kids and same job/salary.

The white was turned down and the mexican got the stamps.

I also know a woman who was white and couldn't get them, her friend applied, she got them. Her friend was white, but her last name was "Gonzales".
 Quoting: Yee Haw

They are Americans not Hispanics, the mom gets support

but she wanted her son to get support and they told her no

because he was a student and didn't have a job. Basically

they told her he can only be eligible if he had a job, since

he is a full time college student.

No,he's an ineligible student. If you are a full-time college student, you have to work 20 hours per week at minimum wage to qualify for food stamps. The people that are on federal work study get full food stamp benefits. College students are eligible for grants/loans/scholarships that help feed them. I was once a poor college student who ate Ramen noodles all the time til I got a good job. Tell him to get a job, and he will qualify or sign up for Federal Work Study or have a child. LOL...
It kind of sucks knowing that he is trying to better himself, but that's life in tha big city.

Most people I know with food stamps have jobs, but they are part-time jobs and aren't enough to make ends meet without additional help. Those are no full-time jobs available.

It's because not only does he have no living expenses since he lives with his mother but he also is going to school. That is why. Unless he has children of his own, the fact he goes to school makes him ineligible for food stamps. Otherwise everyone living at home with mommy/daddy while going to college would collect their food stamps/welfare whatever else they can just because they are not working and instead living at home and attending school.

I hate welfare in CA. When I was a single father taking care of my two daughters state only offered me $28/month in stamps, because I made 9/hour full time. After about 6mos i couldnt afford everything, then thier mom took them plus her other 2, and she got 900 FS plus 700 Cash Aid plus Free day care asisted housing all that shit and jobless. Its retarded.

Can't wait till all these goverment entitlements are gone. 90% of the people on them are are parasites sucking the life out of taxpayers who actually get their ass out of bed and go to work. I'm sure there are some honest folks who will be devestated by this but they have only the lazy asses to blame for overloading the sysytem. We're broke people this shit can't last much longer the free lunch train has jumped the track.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1137559

So you want them to come up to you and beg you for money, so they could get food in them. That is what will happen if the government entitlement were gone. Who knows, you might be one of those begging for money from someone who have a job. Of course if all benefits were stop. The government will put it into something else and you will still be in the same crap you are in now.

No, that is not true.

In my state, students have to work 20 hours a week or more OR have a work-study job. If they have a work-study job they qualify for the full amount of food stamps even if they don't work 20 hours a week.

Re: Food Stamps eligibility requires you HAVE A JOB, yes you read that right....
I can only speak for my state, as rules vary from state to state. In Texas, if you are an able bodied adult without dependents (ABAWD), you have to be working 20 hours per week OR you have to attend their workforce solutions program for 30 hours per week.

Now, here's the kicker - a dependent is defines as a child younger than school-aged. If your child is in school, even in kindergarten, you are considered to be "without dependents" for the purposes of qualifying with food stamp guidelines. And if you want to receive benefits while unemployed, you have to sit in their stupid workforce centers for 30 hours per week job searching and taking classes, and every minute you spend there has to be documented by one of the workforce employees.. If you do not comply, you lose your foodstamp benefits for you AND your school-aged child.

If you are receiving unemployment benefits through the state, these rules do not apply.

The rules vary right now from state to state because the federal government allowed for exemptions to these rules, and exemptions are available for counties with over 9% unemployment. But, states (like Texas) and counties can choose not to take those exemptions.

It is NOT true that the rules are the same in all states. Although it IS a federal program, it is administered at the state level. The dept. of agriculture allows for exemptions to a lot of the rules right now, but STATES HAVE TO CHOOSE TO BE EXEMPT, and some states (like Texas) choose NOT to use those exemptions.

OP. this is only true under certain circumstances, which applies only to certain people. it really depends on what info you give DHS as to what rules they impose upon you by which you are eligible to receive food stamps. The less info you give them, they less they have to hold over your head.

I for example, get 200$ in food stamps a mo, male, have 0 living expenses, do not have a job, etc.

No, in my state, Washington, you could earn up to 1147.00 a month and still be eligible for 43.00 a week in food stamps.

And if you're not working you have to be actively looking for work to qualify.
